If you sign in, you'll be giving them your account info and password... Bye Bye money!

I was selling some musical equipment on e-Bay and I received no less than 5 of these scam attempts... I won't get into specifics about how I responded, but it was instructions on how to "self-copulate"... Oddly, I never heard back form them...

Rather than click on their link, I went to my Zelle app and all was fine.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER respond to a link received by e-mail for any banking activity. Open a new window and go to the site YOU usually use. And problems will be listed there...

Ah, so it isn't an issue with Zelle, it's a social engineering attempt.

I can't remember how many times my M&T Bank account has been frozen. I would care more if I ever had an M&T account in the first place.

Prezactly...

Or like the emails you get claiming your best buy "Geek Squad" subscription is about to be renewed...

Most, not all, but most people through either ignorance or greed are the people taken by these scammers. Glad the OP was smart enough to reach out for opinions.

This is a well known scam. The check actually does clear but then is found to be fraudulent and the money is withdrawn. I hope you don't fall for this some day. They are always "out of town" and will have a relative come pick up the furniture, hence the need for a cashiers check.

ron32162 02-02-2023 09:20 AM

NO! OMG this has scam written all over it I have seen this response from buyers quite a few times. and a cashiers check can go thru the bank and funds be available for you but the bank can take the money back after it clears. just ask the bank

Thanks for reading this post.
What would you do?

so easy to spot a scam, but people fall for them; especially seniors.

OhioBuckeye 02-02-2023 10:31 AM

I think you told them right considering how our world is going. Personally I would only accept cash too, to many dishonest people in our country. To bad we have to be this way but right now I would tell them to keep their cash & bring that instead of going to their bank & getting a check & tell them you’ll give them a written bill of sale! If they’re scammers they won’t want to do it that way, then you’ll know.

So "clear" doesn't mean "clear"? I don't think I have ever had a bank notify me in writing that a check I cashed has cleared.
