I think if the developer had to build that bridge today, we would be talking about another animal. Live and learn and improve on what does not work.

Let the 20 go. What's the big deal. Better they are in front of you anyways. Don't sweat the small stuff. Life's too short as it is.

What actually is the correct rule of the road when this situation comes up? Seems to me it should be treated as a four way stop....no???

Discussions about the bridge regarding the width of the cart lanes has occurred many times before with the VCDD and Ms. Tutt was emphatic that the bridge cannot and will not be altered. The sidewalks have to be the width they are due to access laws for disabilities. To widen the entire span is cost prohibitive. If all vehicles observed the posted 10mph limit on the path, it wouldn't be as difficult to cross.

The bridge is fine. I see nothing wrong with it. Just do what the signs are posted at. car, cart ,bike walker, it is all fine.

You are correct that they are not licensed. I was referring to property taxes which, in some proportion, are used for road repair, enforcement etc. If I'm wrong about that then I stand corrected (I couldn't find a detail of Sumter County expenditures from property taxes). But, regardless, the FL bicycle laws and rights are very straight forward. Like it or not.

Thanks for the link Russ. It gives me a chance to review before I move in and learn any specifics to make my rides safe and enjoyable.

Recumbent bikes are usually lower to the ground and harder to see if you're in a car.

I know it's the law perrjojo, and there are many unfair laws, but explain to me that while I pay all those taxes you mention, property, auto license, etc.,...... WHY do I have to pay a tax for a license plate to ride my motorcycle on the same road that you ride free? Every time I fill my gas tank which you don't have to, I pay TAXES. Why does the law give you a special exemption?
To tell you the truth It doesn't really bother me. I always give them more than 3 feet when passing and will always use the other lane if possible. I do get irritated when behind a group of bikes that intentionally won't let me pass to prove their point that they have every right on the road as me. Here in TV that's rare, but very common in S. Florida.

I understand your reasoning but you could also ride a bike if you so choose and without any additional fee. In fact if you rode a bike you wouldn't have to buy that high priced gas with all of the taxes. Why do motorcycles pay a lower tag fee than cars and why do 18 wheelers pay more? The impact on the road ways is much less for a bicycle than an automobile or a truck, hence the difference. Of course you get irritated at inconsiderate cyclist, just as you would get irritated at inconsiderate motorist. We all run into those that don't seem to think the rules apply to them. I have always thought riding a motorcycle would be fun but just as there are cyclist that seem to want "to prove their point"; I am amazed at how often I see people on motorcycles that seem to have a death wish. Enjoy your bike while can as I can't ride my bicycle any more. I used to put in over 2500 miles a year. Did several 100 milers and even a one week 500 mile ride.

This is a good point that I never thought of when I've wondered why bicycles can use the roads but don't have to be licensed. Plus, I would guess most cyclists are also motorists, so they are paying the road taxes through car ownership. Thanks for pointing that out, perrjojo, and I am sorry you cannot ride your bike anymore. I've had to give up a sport I love due to joint deterioration, and I know how disappointing it is.

Perrjojo, I'm impressed to be sure of the miles you have ridden and can't imagine doing that myself even when I was young on what we called an English Racer 3 speed. Back in the 50's that replaced the regular bicycle with coaster brakes and was high tech. I'd be on a bike myself if it wasn't for my knees giving me trouble. I love my motorcycle and my Iron Butt qualifying ride was 1026 miles in one day, (17 hours) Whatever your riding it's great to get out and experience the fresh smells and freedom of the road. Of course the exercise on a bicycle is a big plus.

That is good advice, Bill, but I wonder why somebody (especially one in Granville) would stay in Ahia in winter when they have a nice warm house in sunny and warm outdoors Florida? (and working a job is no excuse!). I'm going to call my friend in Waynesville to verify your 'cold and snow' story!

PS. I was expecting a comment from you on the bicycle poop post. Unfreeze and get your fertile mind working!

"Working a job" (ie. working for health care benefits) is all we have to fall back on for an excuse......sorry, John! But we're heading that way soon!!!

Staying out of the bicycle poop thing - I'm busy working on getting the popcorn popper back in service!

Health care benefits are the magic words. Watch for Groucho's duck to fall out of the sky! Very valid reason. The money is peanuts compared to what those benefits can do. I just made it to Medicare this month. Now for the fun to start!
Hurry home.
