This obsession with speeding cars/carts by some is over blown. It was reported on NBC this morning that better that 50% of accidents are caused by distractions. Recall the concern of increasing accidents and fatalities for the proposal of raising the speed limits on interstates from 55 mph to 70 mph + and the fact that both have continued a downward trend. I m not dismissing the seriousness of speed but only attempting to place that factor in proper prospective
The applicable laws governing golf carts in The Villages are quickly becoming obsolete because The Villages is no longer just the quaint corner on the historic side. This place is getting larger and longer and its main drawing card is "golf cart accessible" an adjustment in the statute is in order. "Beam me up Scotty" |
I am not sure what laws you are referring to and what changes you believe are required. Golf carts are limited in their capability and the current laws may already adequately reflect those limitations. Perhaps we will see more LSVs in the future, which are more capable vehicles and "shrink" The Villages. However, the size of The Villages is generally not an issue because more people use their nearby facilities. For example, I don't go the historic district by golf cart because I live on the south side.

If I wanted to go so slow, I would have moved to an inactive retirement community.

We have witnessed some outrageous traffic problems. We are living in an area of very long happy hours, those people probably drive home. While sitting at the signal in traffic at Morse and 466, wow, the light turned green for us and a white Cadillac went through the red light for them at an estimated 65 mph. Due to some previous experience I can estimate speed and let me tell you it is dangerous out there, so be careful, be extra careful.

Might just as well include the spandex bicycle crowd to the list to that think it's their right to use the roads and ignore all laws.

I don't worry about speeder's, it's not my job, my job is to stay out of there way and not block traffic. I've tried driving down BV and ECR going the speed limit. Course I was in the right lane and 98% passed me. I was even blocking traffic in the right lane. I stay with the majority traffic flow which usually 38 to 42. You get the occasionally slow poke going 30 and the occasional habitual speeder going 50 plus and I say where cop when you need one! But, then I think he won't catch mr speedy but probably nail me!

After getting to her parking space at work, she jumped out and told the cop that she would be right back...but had to really go. She came back out....and he wrote the ticket. :D |

They are using laser. One blip and get a ticket. Radar and laser detectors will not save you!

I think some of the posted limits on some of the roads here too conservative. Let's hope that the LOE contingent here hasn't made using ticket issuance a priority for income flow as it has in other areas of the country. Its dishonest but its always covered by that "safety issue" its why the "speed too fast for conditions exist" its a catchall and I have seen it used when conditions were ideal. If you watch closely you will see that speed is not the main culprit for accidents here... |
Another Feeling
I had been very good friends with a number of Police in NY and in "most" cases they went by, "eight you skate
and nine your mine". They did not ticket if 8 or under but if 9 or greater you had no chance of getting out of a ticket. :ho: |

We have speed and red light cameras up north. Everyone hates them, but they do slow down the traffic.

At our age time is a finite commodity--you should not have to have it wasted by people doing ten mph under the limit

Obey all laws. You aren't "special" around here.
Or anywhere. |

What did I say that indicated I was a bad driver? Those who run red lights are bad drivers. I never said I ran red lights, I only said my GPS gave an alert of the presence of a 'red light camera'. Personally, I never worry about tickets for the most part because my last ticket of any kind was in Atlanta 29 years ago. I don't run red lights, that's one of my pet peeves as well as drivers that don't know roundabout rules, right-on-red rules, driving slow in the left lane rules, using a turn signal before entering a turn lane instead of after entering the turn lane, drivers who never use a turn signal before turning, and any other driver that doesn't know how to operate on the highway. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...117ee97621.jpg |

I am new in the area but know that people don't like to be delayed on their daily adventures. I have downloaded The Villages GPS and find it to be fantastic but once in a while it hangs up while we are in the golf cart. I wait until I find a safe spot to pull over and do so to reboot. The majority of people ask if we are ok or if they can help...we are out of the way...the kind people who want to help get ripped verbally :blahblahblah: by the clown's who gets upset that they were delayed a few seconds. Three times in a month. I couldn't care less but it upsets my wife. If we were not here I would get into the mix quickly...I'm trying to change, I'm going to change. Mrs. Nucky even said later that evening she was surprised I didn't go Code Red. I'm not raising children anymore..I'm going to find amusement in situations like this and just let it go! |

It was a general statement. I have been saying stuff like that for years. "Don't break the law, DO not break the law in anyway, don't ever break the law, no one is going to help you in this family if you break the law." Good parenting is based on repetition. It seems to have worked. So far. |

This leaves the 30 mph. residential streets. The longest run I know of that you could get "stuck" on would be Morse north of 466, Canal St., Pinellas Place and Hillsborough trail. You would be unlucky if you were travelling the whole length of those roads and the "slowpoke" ahead of you was doing the same---they eventually turn off, so your delay is what?--2 minutes max? Meanwhile , we have drivers in their 80s and 90s who may be uncomfortable with higher speeds. I'd hate to see someone who survived the Great Depression, survived WWII, and survived 9-11 killed because they were pushed to drive at speeds above their ability. |

Speeding is a real life hazard here. We have seen it over and over. At the Tunnels, on the straightaways, we do 20, I made sure our cart was set max for that, and Joe Wizz roars by, passing like he is going to a circus to watch Bimbi? Note on TV sets, zoom zoom, watch the Tach jump up to 5K rpm. Oh, go to the track and watch them wiz by, how nice. We are a retirement community, if you have to speed like a maniac, do you really want to live here and jeopardize the lives of other people who are leisurely going along, enjoying the view? At 16 I was with a friend, he wanted to see what mom's car would do,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, well the last I saw of the speedometer was at 105 and climbing, he turned too soon and was killed, I was in the hospital for two weeks being repaired. Slow down folks. PLEASE. Consider this,,,,,,,,,,, at just 60 mph you are covering 88 feet in one second. At 20 mph you are covering almost 30 feet in one second. Kinetic energy is deadly. Kinetic energy is very deadly, slow down.

It is a great app. My wiseacre comment was related to your comments about speeding by others. (No golf carts were injured in the production of this post.) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
If your ability to drive at the legal limit is beyond your capabilities, don't you think you should be leaving the driving to others-
If you can't react to an emergency situation-the only way I can politely say it is --STOP DRIVING |
