Well, as Winston Churchill once observed, "A lie can make it halfway around the world before truth can get its pants on".
I don't think there's any conspiracy, nor do I think that TV is any more (or less) hated than any other comparable-sized community. The truth of the matter is that, as a group, TV'ers live far healthier and more active lives than similarly-aged people in other places. Nature being what it is, there is a certain amount of hanky-panky going on among healthy people of whatever age, and alcohol is a pretty good "lubricant".
But, going back to Sir Winston's quote--sex sells. Sex generates hits, sells books and movies, etc. A story about randy Villagers may have a small grain of truth to it but I'll guarantee that it will arouse far more interest among a whole lot more people than, say, a story about Villages water volleyball or group quilting, and will be blown far much more out of proportion than the reality of it ever was.
Americans by and large hunger for the salacious. Always have. Follow the money.
