Go to the weather channel.com--put in the villages-then go to hourly--they are predicting 60mph for Mon AM

nitch 09-09-2017 08:26 AM

60 mph is for the wind. if the storm is traveling at 20mph it will be equivalent to a 80mph hit. is the 60 mph forecast sustained wind or gusts ?

Depends how you look at it and what part of the eye.....60-20 = 40

In an effort to assist Villages residents who live in manufactured homes, The Villages community will open multiple hurricane shelters at 4 p.m. today. Emergency supplies have been requested from the state, but residents should plan to bring their own provisions just in case to the Villages Charter High Gym on CR466 and Paradise Recreation Center on Paradise Drive. Neither of these locations are pet-friendly.

Nice so what do you do with your pet?

That should be over ruled by the Gov

No Pets in Shelters? That's Outrageous!

I believe there are about 30 states which come under a federal pet law whereby shelters have to accept pets.
I'm guessing that Florida isn't one of them!

Disgraceful -- absolutely disgraceful.

Businesses in the town squares are not allowed to board up their windows on the outside.
They are allowed to do so from inside.

Ignoring the reality and practicality in favor of too high of a priority on aesthetics during a time of destructive winds expectation.

As a result a lot of unprotected large plate glass windows in all the town squares.

jimbo2012 09-10-2017 06:21 AM

So if you own a store would you let your investment disappear due to an unreasonable request not to board up?

I would board up and deal with any complaints from TV later.

Yes, and this begs the question.....how about the residents being able to protect their investment by boarding up their home? I've lived here 12 years and have not seen nor heard any information whether this is allowed. Deed restrictions do not address it and as far as I know, the District hasn't either.

There is a hurricane preparedness show at Savannah (? I think, might be another one) Center each year. I went to one a couple of years ago and there were a number of vendors selling hurricane shutters that can be installed in The Villages.

eremite06 09-10-2017 07:42 AM

Does the District allow those shutters to be installed?

You have to go to ARC with some kind of plans for approval for the specific shutters you are going to use.

I assume that is what the vendors that installed those shutters did, but I don't know for sure. Some of contractors/vendors skip going to ARC but usually is not a good idea because if you skip ARC you may end up having to take everything out... but many are successful by rolling the dice and skipping ARC.

Several homes have hurricane shutters, both powered and manual. ARC is most likely a formality since not sure any menber is interested in possible liability.

With all due respect, I think there should be adequate shelters for residents and their pets but not every shelter allow pets. Human life should be the priority. I understand the concern that The Villages does not have adequate shelter for pets. Barking dogs and the elderly don't necessarily make for a good mix.
