I can, but I don't. No need here.

That really is my thought as well. I feel it is very safe here. To me it seems a burden to have to worry about a gun on my person or in my purse. That's just me. If it gives one a feeling of inner peace and it really feels natural and comfortable then sure why not.
I believe The Villages is one of the safest place you could live in the country. It was the number 1 reason I moved here.

The rule was changed and they did NOT have to carry off duty. After that a few officers carried when in the village that they were employed in, but no where else. After a few years, they all stopped carrying. I certainly don't know where they all are now that they are retired or weather they carry now, but I would guess that they don't. By the way, it was a very safe suburb, like TV.
I also still stand by my thought that people carry here for a reason other than fear of crime. TV is very, very safe.

And what would that reason be? Do you never read the online news? Do you ever go out of the bubble? We're not worried about residents of TV; our concern is the trash that comes into our "safe haven" or if we decide to go outside TV. You're really not naïve to think nothing could ever happen to you, are you?

They carry simply because they can. I don't think for one minute any one living here is really afraid enough to feel the need of a gun. But, as I said before, if it offers them some peace of mind...then go ahead. Yes, I go out of TV...and I am more cautious and aware of my surroundings...but if God forbid, I ever had a reason to use a gun....it would be turned on me long before I could ever think about it.
This is a guess...but I'm fairly certain the average criminal is considerably younger than you or I or most everyone living here. Think of the difference of movements and reflexes. Seniors and guns.....doesn't give me a good feeling.
If we were in a big dangerous city, I guess I wouldn't feel this way, but I just don't see the need here.
This thread started as a question about weather or not a lot of women in TV are carrying guns in their purses, and by the sounds of these posts, I believe that very, very few women carry a gun.

ronsroni 10-02-2015 01:18 AM

I know of at least 6 women....ALL 70+ years of age, who carry.
It's like disabled parking. You NEVER know why I may have a disability as you cant SEE it. Folks are packing for many reasons. Two women in particular have disabled spouses and truly protect the family. They travel all over Florida to clinics, hospitals and it is way too easy to zero in on them as victims. Only 1 discharged hers in time of peril. NO CHARGES filed. I hope she is the last one needing to fire a round. I am in favor of this. Responsible actions prevail or else. Men drink and carry too. All irresponsible Idiots go to jail.
Yeah. Don't mess with Bridie.

You and me are wise birds GerryAnn. When we see the need or the atmosphere of safety shifts, we will react. We both have lived in homes with LEO and they taught us well.

Yesterday I watched frozen with shock and sadness as the shooting on the compus in Oregon was covered on television, and further was upset when I listened to the POTUS say that laws should be changed about gun control.

I don't think either of us have a problem with the second amendment. There are laws against drugs and they don't work because only people with a conscience comply. It is more than the often repeated guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Something has to change with how young children are being raised. Mothers and fathers used to give them a conscience. Now people turn them over as little babies to people that they would not give their car keys too. It is a huge social and moral mess in this world. We should always try to help others in need, but enabling people who can work to lay around lazy is another. You cannot legislate morality or decency.

I believe that people should be allowed to carry guns to protect themselves, but I believe that carrying a gun here is overkill. But that could change and some idiot could come here and want to kill all of us.

But we moved here for the same reasons we moved to any place in our lifetime. We moved to the nicest and safest place we could afford and we worked hard to be able to choose the nicest and safest place.

Well, at least this post is a little bit more believable. You realize you went from a previous post that no LEO in your husband's group carried while off duty and none of them carry after they retired, to many carried off duty and you don't really know what they are doing in retirement? I hope the chief was not reacting to your irrational concern regarding guns and recreation that he changed department policy.

Unfortunately, some on here would question your choice of friends and where your friends choose to hang out. Or some self serving nonsense regarding their superior upbringing giving them the exclusive wisdom to avoid trouble. I will just say your friends are savvy and aware of the danger all around us. It's the world we live in. I hope they stay safe.

You obviously did not read the posts here or you are pulling things out of the air. They all initially carried because it was a requirement of the job. Yes, I personally swayed the chief to change this requirement. The policy was outdated and the village realized this. No one should be out shopping, dancing, drinking, partying, etc with a gun on their person. Once this was changed, they stopped carrying. The ones I have kept in touch with in their senior years, do not carry. The ones I haven't kept in touch with....I obviously don't know.

You need to reread your original post. And shopping, dancing, partying are perfectly appropriate scenarios to CC. But no alcohol.

That is interesting that you feel I may be uncomfortable around guns. I lived for 40 years with a LEO. He never, ever carried when not working. I can think of a few times (maybe twice) that we would be going through a questionable area and he would inform me that he had the gun under the seat of the car. His 3 guns have been given to each of 3 children. His fellow officers never carried off duty. ( the new generation police might be different). My sister is married to a retired LEO. In the 30 years he was LEO he never, ever carried off duty....doesn't even own a gun. My brother was LEO in Tampa....never, ever carried off duty. Never owned a gun. My nephew is an active LEO...does not carry off duty. So...no, I'm not uncomfortable around guns. I will say that the 30 years my husband was LEO, I never touched his guns....had no interest.

Hmmmm.

Don't get what you're talking about. Didn't carry...don't carry.... Nothing changed.

There's no reason to pick it all apart, if that what you're doing. Actually don't have a clue what you are doing.

Bottom line is, my question was answered. Very few women carry here in TV. The person who told me that she and almost all of her friends carry everywhere here is off her rocker.

Me either, and it's a subject my friends and I have discussed. As someone said, the Facebook woman likely pals around with like-minded people, so her perspective is skewed. As is mine at zero.

But hey, I did see one of the infamous bath loofahs attached to a car antenna yesterday!

"According to Buzzfeed News: “I’m told that sticking a loofah on your cart antenna signifies you’re into swinging. According to multiple people, wearing gold shoes or letting your shirt tag stick out in the back signals you’re on the prowl."

I didn't know about the gold shoes or shirt tag. Sometimes, innocently, I suppose I do wear my shirt inside out but the tag says "IRREG". This may explain why no one has bothered with me.
