Last week, on a windy day, I was driving to Ocala on 475. Empty plastic garbage bins were in front of most of the farms, I didn't care until..... on the two lane road, 55 mph, a large bin blew into the street in front of me.... an 18 wheeler was coming toward me in the other lane.... my choices were, die or hit the garbage bin....

Since I'm here you can figure which one I chose. Did some damage to my car though. :cryin2:

Imagine bins blowing around on windy days.

Back home we always rolled the bin out (didn't carry it, they DO come on wheels these days, for those who complain about how cumbersome and heavy they were in the stone-age when dinosaurs roamed the earth). Everyone used the big black garbage bags - also known as trash can liners, so no one ever had to worry about gross maggot-infested rotting gelatinous goo sticking to the barrel. The trash guy would lift the can, jerk it toward the truck, the full liner would slide out into it, and then he'd lay the can back down on its side.

Unless there was a hurricane expected, you never saw empty cans tipping over and blowing into the road because they were intentionally tipped over on the bank of the property.

It is very antiquated and unhygienic how we have it here in the Villages. Leaving trash on the ground gets a crazy amount of bugs/rodents, and makes a soupy mess when it rains. It's also terrible for the crew to have to handle leaky dirty cardboard and trash bags flying around in the rain overnight.

Thank you

So you move here and want to change things to the way they were where you used to live. 🤔

Well, good for back home. They're still ugly, still unnecessary extra landfill plastic, still takes longer to empty into the trucks, winds can still blow the cans, and we still have small garages. The way it's done now is cleaner and more attractive, and I for one am happy with it.

Garbage bins

In response to our new member, I take umbrage in suggesting that The Villages is antiquated or uncivilized.

We have lived here 13 years and have not experienced plastic bag problems. Once in a blue moon something may escape from the truck as it leaves the area. I solve that problem by venturing outside and picking it up.

I put leftover chicken bones and other smelly items in a Ziplock back and put it in the freezer until pickup day. It takes a while to build up a habit of remembering to get it out on the right day.

I am closing in on 80 years. I don’t care if the bin has wheels or not. Not a fan of storing it somewhere either. We don’t generate enough waste to even put out bags twice a week. Maybe some residents should look at how much garbage they are producing to reduce their foot print instead of requesting bins that would certainly result in higher assessments for purchase new trucks and bins.

People leave where they came from for various reasons. I can’t believe that using black garbage bags means our area has not developed modern methods.

I think that color coded trash cans are the way to go here in The Villages. Just like those color coded scrunchies on the top of cars in the parking lots. Just think ..... walk down the street and see which neighbors do what for fun. No need to track down a car in the parking lot and follow it. You may be amazed at what surprises are awaiting just a few houses away!!! Consider color coded trash cans as a way of enhancing "neighborhood solidarity".:a20::a20::a20::a20:

You don’t have trash cans rolling around the streets! Good reason

Like having no garbage cans

Very glad we don’t have garbage cans! Back in Illinois people leave them out for days after garbage is collected. Also they store them in front of their houses which looks terrible. Be glad they eliminated that from happening in the villages!

At first reading, I thought the OP's position was kind of crazy, but I've since seen the error of my ways.

I think if we were to go to those large Plastic Trash containers, color coded with Liquid Lights (LED's) to match the owner's interests, we'd have a vast improvement to our current, dour ambiance.

Maybe add some painted "white crosses" to the inside of the flip-over cover, just to get all the bases covered.

It was a huge PITA, and was just getting more and more complicated at the time we were selling and moving. Don’t miss any of it! Not only was the whole process a huge hassle, but we had very lax HOA rules because our dues were only $25 annually and that was optional, so there were trash cans that never left the driveway during the week despite the rule to keep them out of site. Our neighbors across the street lined up the three large cans against their garage door and left them there permanently.

That doesn't at all sound like California. To be more believable: You would get a huge fine if you accidentally put the wrong thing in one of the bins, but would be ignored and perhaps encouraged if you created unsightly, bacterial producing garbage on the streets. Did I do that right?

I have had absolutely no problems with our garbage bags in TV. What about the other places catching up with our system? Why does it seem so difficult for them to be efficient, less noisy and more user friendly?

Yup, that's pretty accurate.

L.A. requires 4 curbside bins, black for landfill, blue for recycling, green for organics, and brown for horse manure. Some Bay Area and PNW cities require even more - 5 and even 6 different bins because they want the residents to separate out recyclables that are paper and plastic into different bins.

Fail to adhere to Dystopian policies and you will be heavily fined. Live under a blue tarp along side the freeway and poop all over Hollywood Blvd, however, is A-OK.

AMB444 05-31-2025 02:10 PM

My vote would be "no" to using a big heavy trash can since I have zero room in my garage to keep it. I would have to leave it outside of the house somewhere.

There are residential people in LA that need to dispose of horse manure? Huh?
Well at least the bin color matches the contents.

almondz 05-31-2025 02:28 PM

They collect garbage 2X's a week. Up North it was once and cans were left out and you had to store them. What's the problem?

SusanStCatherine 05-31-2025 02:31 PM

Switched to keep bags

Recently our district 13 went to a lot of trouble to get a different company to pick up trash bags. The previous company was getting automated and would have required bins. I'm glad as I don't like the bins.

If you tie the bags tightly enough, the other critters in the area won't bother them either.

We have a trash can with wheels that we use to "store" our trash in. And then we wheel it to the curb, pull the bag out of the can, set it down on the curb, and wheel the empty can back under the carport up against the laundry shed, where it's completely out of sight to any neighbors passing by. That way we don't have to keep the smelly chicken or fish carcasses in the house for a few nights waiting for trash day if that's what we've cooked that week. The pizza box gets folded up and put in that can too, so it doesn't take up most of the room in our kitchen trash container.

Our trash guys will empty the can for us if we leave it out at the curb, but that's only because we don't abuse their generosity. They're not supposed to do that. They have warned others in the area that it wasn't allowed. I think we leave it out maybe once every few months, when we have a lot of grass clippings and yardwork waste that's too heavy for us to lift on our own.

We always use a can liner, so maybe they don't mind since they don't have to pick up the whole can, they just have to yank the filled liner out of it and swing it into the back of their truck.

Possums, coyotes, cats, and small rodents will be out at night and can get into plastic bags. Best to take them out in the early morning.

Not really, depends on area. Same as Florida.

Vickim 05-31-2025 08:36 PM

I love the fact we don’t have trash bins they get left out for hours if not days . Have to find a place to store them and with twice weekly pick up you’d never fill it up. If people didn’t put their bag out at night no rodent or bugs will get into the bags ! I vote No to the big smelly bins that get left at the curb and become a big eye sore !

70 Challenger 05-31-2025 09:02 PM

They pickup trash twice a week, we don’t need any cans. Some People are lazy and the cans will sit out all day. Get your own can for your garage, then on trash day take the bags to the curb. The system works fine!

Six years we've been here and that hasn't ever happened to us, or the neighbors whose driveways we can see from our yard. Just the crows in the afternoon, and twice, some vultures came to visit down the street.

It would be nice if there were some common trash drops for those that are leaving town. Trash that shouldn't be on the street for days because of pests and too smelly to leave in their home.

We have several neighbors who would gladly do this for us, as we would for them. Surely you have neighbors like this too?

L.A. is V E R Y diverse. There are horsey-areas within the city limits, such as Sylmar and Tujunga. Cities around L.A. many have heard of are not actually cities, they are neighborhoods that are actually in the City of Los Angeles. Hollywood, for example, is not a city. It is Los Angeles, as is Sylmar, Northridge, Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks, San Pedro, and many others.

Believe it or not, there are horse properties in Compton, also. Compton, however, IS its own city and not part of Los Angeles. Watt is Los Angeles though. Clear as mud, right?

I keep a 32 gallon can in the garage, with black bag in it, and deposit my kitchen bags into the black bag. Then take the black bag to the street on pickup days. Simple, efficient, and no trash cans on the street.

That is exactly what we do. Seems to work just fine. Never had a bag "pecked open by birds" nor had "paper strewn down the street".

They don't "stink" in our garage, so I fail to see how they would stink when put out at the end of the driveway...

"Everyone"? I'm sure you can find ONE reliable neighbor who will keep an eye on your home when you're away. I know we do. We drop off a bag of trash when we leave and they do the same when they leave.

They also have use of our extra refrigerator (in the garage) if they need it when we're away...
