I think the garbage system here is the best I've experienced in my life. The trash-to-energy recycling process is great. A Leader in Sustainable Waste Solutions | Reworld

We also like it picked up twice a week, even on holiday weeks because it takes less space in the garage.

About 25% of the Villages population lives alone and a large proportion of those are females over the age of 65. Even for men over the age of 65, it's not as easy to roll those big bins to the curb as it was when we were 35. With arthritis and other health issues, it's just asking for injuries to require the Villages residents to deal with moving big bins.

As people mentioned, the bins could become a projectile during storms. We do get hurricanes here.

The streets are narrow. I saw a truck hit a bin in a community adjacent to the Villages and send it flying 30 feet one time.

I, for one, am very happy with the current system.

Villager24 05-31-2025 07:03 AM

I love the current system. No can left out for days.

ByebyeMichigan 05-31-2025 07:04 AM

just not necessary when we get pick up twice/week , plus it would be an eyesore cuz ppl would leave out all day long AFTER garbage was picked up , plus in hurricane season they’d be blowing all over the neighborhood …….

Golfshopguy 05-31-2025 07:10 AM

I like it the way it is. Don’t fix something that isn’t broke

It is very antiquated and unhygienic how we have it here in the Villages. Leaving trash on the ground gets a crazy amount of bugs/rodents, and makes a soupy mess when it rains. It's also terrible for the crew to have to handle leaky dirty cardboard and trash bags flying around in the rain overnight.

I recommend people find their CDD reps here and email them a simple request to modernize the system as I have done as well.

Thank you

I completely disagree and think the system here works exceptionally well.

Compared to where I lived before, the fact that they come twice a week and take anything you put out is fantastic. And if you have a huge item, all it takes is a phone call to the district.

It's ideal, frankly.

They pick up twice a week, there is no need for bulky ugly trash cans all over the place.

I've seen trash bags ripped open by vultures, not crows, and we had ours ripped open several days ago. My wife had put the trash out too early one day, so now she knows that trash goes out just before dark and no problems.

It would be nice if there were some common trash drops for those that are leaving town. Trash that shouldn't be on the street for days because of pests and too smelly to leave in their home.

Among all the other thoughtful replies, I would think that having garbage cans would require a different type of hydraulics-fitted trucks, which are more expensive and surprisingly noisy at 6am. I kinda like the way it is now: less automated, simple, quiet, and it allows me yet another chance to be friendly.

Bottom line IMO... We had the bin approach (2 - trash & recyl) where we previously lived, near TV. Wheeling them out twice weekly was a pain. Then they may be left near the curb all day if you're out. Then you needed space to keep them. Taking up valuable garage space, or on the house side. Then it takes LONGER for the truck's auto-pickup mechanism. Perhaps more reasons.

Our guys - if it's one bag, the truck barely slows down and they pick and toss in.

...sorry for the trash talk.

The trash crews here are great and love that they come twice a week. Hell of the deal for $20.00 a month.
To the original poster:
The average garage here in TV can barely handle a car, 2 golf carts, a couple of bikes, storage cabinets, golf clubs etc.
Where in the world would one put one of those large rolling trash bins???

Older folks can’t handle 75lb bins rolling down the driveway when full. Plus renters would leave the bins out at the curb 24/7 when they leave. It would make curb appeal go down.

If it’s not broke don’t fix it. Right now I’m not limited to one or two trash bins. If I have a lot to get rid of it all goes to the curb and it’s all picked up. When you have bins they limited you to having everything in the bins and the lid most close. Most likely they would need new trucks to pickup the bins.

The biggest problem with cans is bringing them back in. By 6:45 when the trash truck leaves my neighborhood there is nothing left along the street. That wouldn't be the case if we used cans, there would be cans and lids at the end of driveways or blowing down the road all day. Much, much better the way it is now.

STRONGLY AGREE w Bill …

as well as the other Suggestion
that folks WAIT until DUSK to
bring “Trash Bags” to Curbside …

… as to Maintain the Curb Appeal
throughout the neighborhoods

A Primary Reason my Wife and I were First Attracted to the Villages was due to the Picturesque neighborhoods !!

My Immediate Description, that
I continue to use to describe it is,

“The communities appear
like a Disney Park for Adults.”

That Goes Without Say:
Garbage Cans/Bins at the foot of driveways would Most Definitely make ‘OUR HOMES” look like the typical neighborhoods we all left behind !!

I’m sure if you moved to a town that had garbage bins they would love to have you.

If you tie the bags tightly enough, the other critters in the area won't bother them either.

We have a trash can with wheels that we use to "store" our trash in. And then we wheel it to the curb, pull the bag out of the can, set it down on the curb, and wheel the empty can back under the carport up against the laundry shed, where it's completely out of sight to any neighbors passing by. That way we don't have to keep the smelly chicken or fish carcasses in the house for a few nights waiting for trash day if that's what we've cooked that week. The pizza box gets folded up and put in that can too, so it doesn't take up most of the room in our kitchen trash container.

Our trash guys will empty the can for us if we leave it out at the curb, but that's only because we don't abuse their generosity. They're not supposed to do that. They have warned others in the area that it wasn't allowed. I think we leave it out maybe once every few months, when we have a lot of grass clippings and yardwork waste that's too heavy for us to lift on our own.

We always use a can liner, so maybe they don't mind since they don't have to pick up the whole can, they just have to yank the filled liner out of it and swing it into the back of their truck.

In my area crows only pick on white or clear bags. They leave black bags alone.
