I remember those days. I had a part time job while I was in college in Bioastronautics at the Air Force Weapons Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base. My boss was close friends with Gus Grissom who later died along with Ed White and Robert Chaffee.

Jan. 27, 1967: 3 Astronauts Die in Launchpad Fire. 1967: Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee are killed on the launch pad when a flash fire engulfs their command module during testing for the first Apollo-Saturn mission. They are the first U.S. astronauts to die in a spacecraft.

My best friend in grade school's father was one of the doctors doing the screening. Sorry for all the reminiscing but that was an exciting time in my life.
