I caught a slight case of claustrophobia a few years back, and I still have relapses occasionally. LOL Combine that with the hot flashes (do they ever go away?) and I certainly don't want a hot mattress -- especially if it wraps around my face and I can't call for help! :yikes:

I promised to tell you all about our mattress adventures today, but we got sidetracked by a furniture store grand opening, so the only mattresses we tried were the Simmons Beautyrest because that's the only brand they carried. Did you know that none of the Simmons mattresses can be flipped? They all have only one top side. Interestingly, the most comfortable mattress (to me) was also the cheapest. The salesman looked pretty disgusted with me and said it wasn't much better than sleeping on the floor. The more expensive mattresses got progressively softer. They all had a different thickness of pillowtop, but no pillowbottom. Don't people flip their mattresses anymore? What do you do when the mattress gets the, um, posterior indentation? :dontknow:

Mint & Boomer, I haven't tried the SleepNumber yet. MMC, that's a good idea! Maybe I should just check out the SleepNumber at a Radisson? Meanwhile, I'll keep shopping and let you all know what I learn.

When I was shopping for a new mattress last year I was surprised that most of the mattresses I found could not be flipped. My new mattress can be rotated (head to foot) but not flipped.

My wife and I have vastly different ideas on how hard a mattress should be. I thought a sleep number bed would be good. We stayed overnight in a Radisson hotel for a few nights which had the sleep number bed. I selected 35 as a comfortable level for me, she selected a much firmer setting 65 to 70. I thought the bed was great but she hated it. Because of the difference in our settings she complained that she felt like she was about to fall off a cliff as she approached the center of the bed.

If you like a very firm mattress, I'm not surprised that the cheapest mattress felt the best. Usually, more expensive mattresses add more springs and more padding. I wound up buying a bed that was firmer than I would like but softer than my wife would have preferred and it worked out good.

No, none of the above, they all have issues. I have a sleep number in VA, and the problem is if one person likes it soft and the other likes it hard. I like 75 or 80 and Mrs l2 likes 30 or 35. So near the middle feels like rapids going over the falls. I am constantly struggling to keep from dropping off. In TV we have a top of the line sealy pillow top and that thing I feel like I am rolling off the edge onto the floor. Comfortable yes, flat no. When I lived in NH many many years ago, I went to Sunset mattress in I think the town was Ossipee and had them custom make a mattress. Still have it, but its only a double, most comfortable bed ever and its 40 years old. They just don't make them like they used to.

Before you decide, look at Sams. They have tremendous buying power and usually can get a pretty good deal on a pretty nice mattress. We have purchased two there in the last five years, not for our bed, but the sleepers aren't walking funny and they look bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning according to all reports. (Both were for daughters)

Wow! This is a tough one. Picking out a mattress is such a personal thing. Our bodies are all so different and each of us requires different firmness or softness for comfort. Another thing I find impossible to do is picking out a mattress in the time period your given to lay on it in the store. Those few minutes tell you absolutely nothing compared to a nights sleep on it. They all seem to feel great for the first few minutes.

I agree that price has nothing to do with it. I know people that have paid a huge price for theirs and hate them. Meanwhile bargain hunter me, paid very little at Beds, Beds, Beds on 441 in Leesburg and I must say this is the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on.But again it was just luck. Its is a Serta, perfect sleeper.

Good to know they have an exchange policy before you buy just in case!
This is the first time I can say, YES, I do love my mattress!

I currently use a sleep number. Can anyone give me a phone # of a sleep number store near tv so I can order another to be delivered to our new home? There is nothing as easy on the joints and back as this mattress.

We also have a sleep number....we had a King size in NY they allowed us to go up and down....then we sold thinking it would not fit in our bedrrom in the villa....we then found a queen one for sale from someone here in TV's....the warantee does not follow us but it is only 3 years old and we only paid $450...can you imagine? check out craislist....

HOWEVER....I like to sleep with my head elevated a little and 3 pilloes just doesn't do it for me....the queen size does not go up and down....

If anyone has a King and would prefer a Queen....I would trade in an instant!!! Even pay a little extra!! Anyone????

My queen has dual chambers and they do change with the valve. Sound like yours needs repair. The company is great, called them and told them the pump wasn't working. They mailed ups a new one immediately. This company has a wonderful service dept.

CJ....the pumps work just fine and I can change the numbers....BUT our King was like two single beds connected....I could raise my head up or my legs....with a different remote! I loved it!

I do love the Sleep number we have in regards to changing the number....I just want to elevate my poor little head!

PS...Don't worry Gracie....I change my number all the time!!
