Well, tonight is my last night at the firehouse. My wife is now "home" in our now empty house packing the car. The only things in our home is one air mattress, one sleeping bag and pillow and an older 20" TV sitting on the floor.
I'll get home in the morning, (praying for a quiet night), deflate the air mattress, put the TV at the curb, and start driving south to our new lives. We managed to pack everything we are taking down there in ONE ABF Relocube; http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v8...k/DSCN1898.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v8...k/DSCN1897.jpg We will take our time driving our Prius down, visiting family along the way. I usually drive fast and long, so "taking my time" will be a new experience for me. This whole thing has not even sunk in....and I do not think it will for awhile. Strange the things you notice. In the last few days my keyring has gone from a huge weighty proof of responsibility and busyness to nothing. I like it. Every room in the house echoes. It has been strange working so hard changing a home into the next person's house. Like wiping clean a canvas you spent years painting a beautiful picture.....so new people can start painting over it their own painting. I find myself praying the ones who follow find the joy we did here. They will never know it like I did, as I designed and built it myself. Oh well. It kept the rain off my head for the last 11 years. I have so many plans for our Florida home. I have the blueprints and approval for a nice 14' x 21' garage addition. I'm redoing my Lanai. I get to buy another vehicle....have no idea yet what I'll buy but I know it will NOT be rusty! It will take awhile to settle in. To regain some sense of "normal". To go from being one of the "old guys" at the firehouse to one of the "new kids" in the neighborhood. A new address. A new career. New friends. A new Church. A new life. Looking forward to meeting some of you folks.....learning from you all how you do this thing. Hope my GPS knows where Chrispers is...... See you soon! Frank |
Frank,
Wow, the time has finally come. I love your description of wiping the canvas clean and changing your home to the next person's house. When you get here... welcome home! |
Sounds like you've got it all under control, Frank! Have a safe trip south -

Enjoyed your post and it really hit home...planning on moving to the Villages after June 2013..have a house in Woodbury. Started cleaning out the basement and lots of memories were stored there. Attic is next. My son is buying a house and will offer him some things. Next door neighbor already asked to buy the snowblower!!! Good luck to you!

Looks like you built a great house up North. Getting everything into one cube is amazing!
Have a fantastic last night on the job - Later, got to get to bed to get up for pickleball at 8 am. . |
Frank, I wish you and your wife only the best as you embark on the next chapter in your lives. Your description of your last hours of work and home brought a tear to my eye. I can feel the emotions you must have been feeling when you wrote it.
I don't expect to make my move for at least another year but you're one of the people I'm going to look up when I arrive. Of course, by that time, you'll be a TV old-timer. Best of luck with your move. Take your time, enjoy your memories and your family, and embrace your new home. |

Jim's last day of work is today as well! We won't be heading down to TV until after Christmas, though. We still have the house in NH, we have had several "interested" parties but no offers.
If it sells before the New Year, great! If not, it will go back on the market in the spring and Jim will head up there to monitor things. We are not going to spend this winter worrying about whether all the lights were turned off or the doors were closed properly while there is noone there daily to monitor things. And we are not going to have our son drive 1+ hours (each way) every time the house is shown to check up after the realtor - that is just not fair for him. It is sad that people that one hires cannot be responsible for making sure all lights are off and all doors are closed - it just boggles the mind! Even if it had been sold, we would still be in NH through Christmas, but we would have been staying with our son and his family - that is going to be the plan at least for the first few years. We will revisit how that goes each year. |

Frank, you may be in (or near) Florida already as your post is a few days old. Hope you and your wife are traveling (or have arrived) safely.

We are here now!!
We are now full time Floridians! We have tons to do, but need to keep telling ourselves that unlike all of the past trips down here, this time we have from now on to do it. Our Relocube should get here Tuesday. I'll just put most everything in the garage for now and work on it little by little. Closing has not yet happened on the NY home, so we are praying for a quick and smooth closing. I'll feel better when the check is in my account and we only own our Florida home. We have to change licenses, car tags, residency, etc..... I'll need to buy another car or truck, etc. I need to powerwash the house and trim bushes and weed the flowerbeds. I need to buy a Christmas tree. I need a haircut. I need a TAN...! So...the new life begins......it will take months for it to even seem real..... Frank |
Congrats, and welcome to the neighborhood.
