Oh dear, oh dear, Mr. Tony, it seems you have now managed to rally Villagers to come after English majors. Villagers carrying their pitchforks and torches. (I almost did not use that allusion lest you think that I am an English major. And I also know I should refrain from saying, "Et tu, Munc?")

Oh well. Now, of course, I just have to tell you a story. I think I have told it somewhere before in all this stuff from over a year.

Back in the meet market days, remember those, one of my good friends would lie about her job when she first met a guy. Not only was she an English major, she was an English teacher. The most dreaded of all the dreaded cliches, so most people think.

So anyway, once he got past, "Hey Baby, what's your sign?" the next question might be, "Where do you work?"

And so help me, she lied every time she was interested. She would say that she worked for the phone company. She knew that if she told the guy that she was indeed an English teacher, he would just move down at least 2 or 3 barstools.

True story from long, long ago.

Speaking of English majors... I get emails from Grammar Girl, much like the ones I get from Spaceweather. Would any of you be interested in knowing how to keep from mixing up possessives and contractions, or what you call two Blackberry phones, or "going to" vs/ "will"? I could post the emails I get from her if you're interested. And no, I was not an English major, although I was an Ohio majorette for a while.

Here's another English major, Tony.
After doing student teaching to high school seniors my junior year in college, I added business as a minor and never pursued teaching.
Instead, I became an executive assistant to the VP General Counsel of a Fortune 500 company.
After the 3 children were in school, became a SC real estate agent and enjoyed property management of 400 resort homes on
the weekly rental market.
I have not been able to find a suitable part time niche since I moved to TV 3 years ago.

My major?

It used to be the Broncks, you know, and I think they had a hard time spelling it.

BS in History from Towson State (Towson, MD).

Master Scheduler for Western Electric products in Omaha, NE.
Retired early.
Moved to NC.
Stayed "Retired" for 2 weeks.
Went to work for Progress Engery in NC. Jill of all Trades for Major Projects division.
Stayed for 10 years.
Retired in 2009.

Will stay retired this time.

Wellll, I got me a BS degree in BS. Then I got me a Master's degree in the same thing. Did not get me one of them PhD's though. You know those things -- PhD's -- Piled higher and Deeper.

I don't know about English majors, but there are more accountants.

I majored in accounting. I started out working as an income tax examiner for New York State. Then I went on to become an auditor and then an accountant. Although I still have an accounting title, at the request of management, I've spent the last 15 years becoming more of an administrator than an accountant.

Looking forward to retiring and moving to TV.
