According to the National Weather Service, lightning can strike as far as 10 miles away from its parent thunderstorm.

If you hear thunder, you should go inside. Even if you don’t see lightning.

A while back I was swimming laps in a sports pool when out of nowhere, thunder and a lightning bolt instantaneously struck directly overhead. I jumped out of the pool as fast as I could, but noticed the other gentleman in the pool wasn’t getting out. I approached him and asked if he just saw the lightning and suggested he get out of the pool. He laughed and said “thanks for the concern son, but I’m in my 90’s and if that’s how the good lord wants to take me, so be it”. A couple weeks later, I told that story to the pool attendant and his response was “thank God he didn’t get fried, you have no idea how much paper work I would’ve had to fill out.

Try as you might, you won't find many or any reports of people dying IN THE POOL. People on the deck, surrounding areas, sure.

Whether it's because everyone gets out or something else, I dunno, but no one seems to die in pools. There's been a couple people shocked by lightning(not in TV, but in FL), no fatalities though. I wouldn't want to be the first, but it seems like the pools are properly grounded and there's a lot of higher points to hit first.
