We attended the commissioning ceremony in San Francisco of the America LHA 6 on Saturday. We were the invited guests of the Chief Engineer of the ship and we had a personal tour of practically anything we wanted too see. ThIs included not only the hangar bay and flight deck, but we got into the crew quarters, officer and crew messes and then the most detailed tour/explanation of the propulsion and engineering operation. Climbed and descended 7-8 steep flights of stairs
To see this operation. A lot of Navy and Marine brass present.

Then yesterday for fleet week they had a blue angel air show....quite spectular. In addition to the America the Navy had a number of ships in port along with a large Coast Guard cutter where public tours were available.

I will try and post some pics once we return.

Default USS America

Here is Commissioning booklet for the USS America which was held October 11th in San Francisco. The picture gives you some perspective of how large this ship is. It will be the Flag Ship of an Amphibious Assaut Group of up to 2,500 Marines and the ship itself will carry up to an additional 1,000 sailors and they will have a variety of helicopters, Osprey(s) and F-35B jets in support. This ship is a technological feat!!
