US-301 or I-75?
My wife and I are going to be making a lifestyle visit to TV. We will be traveling south on I-95. Both AAA and mapquest route us down US-301 which looks like 100 miles of small towns and slow traffic. I'm wondering if it would be better to continue west on I-10 then south on I-75 (exiting at Ocala). Any suggestions?

If you opt to come 301, just be aware of the speed limits. Waldo and Lawtey have national reputations for their speed traps. Go the speed limits and you won't have a problem. Don't, and they do write tickets!

My wife and I debate the merits of these two options on occasion, since we drive down to TV from New Jersey every couple of months. Staying on I-10W and picking up I-75S will definitely put more miles on your vehicle. The advantages are that this route allows one basically to leave the cruise control on, and it avoids the aforementioned speed traps on 301. Sometimes I simply do not feel like slowing down to 45MPH, then 35MPH, then 25MPH at the end of a 19-hour journey.
My wife's point of view is that there is no reason to add 40 extra miles to the odometer if you are not going to reduce the duration of the drive. And the psychological impact of driving away from your destination does seem to be a downer. Furthermore, she makes sure that we do not run afoul of the local constabulary by pointing out all of the speed changes on 301 to me. Although we have taken the I-10/I-75 path twice, I am not sure we will do it again. Funny, northbound we never even consider taking I-75/I-10. We always take 27/441 up to 301. Whichever path you take, have a safe trip!!! GeorgeIII |

!-95 301
My hubby and I have visited TV several times and here is how the route we take from our home in Va. We take I-95 all the way to Walterboro SC. We generally arrive there in the late afternoon. This gives us time to have a leisure dinner and get to bed early. After driving through a large part of Va, all of NC and SC we are fairly tired from sitting all day.
The next morning we try to be on the road by 9am at the latest and drive on I-95 to Florida, then take the bypass around Jacksonville and pick-up I-10 W. We get off 301 and go towards Ocala. This is where I switch with hubby because he (probably like most men!) doesn't like to speed up and then slow down. He wants to keep the cruise control on all the time. I actually prefer the change in speed limits because he keeps me more alert. I have not gotten a speed ticket yet either. Also, I enjoy the scenery as we approach Ocala...the horse farms are very nice to see. Once we get to Ocala I then go the 27/441 route to TV. As someone else said....and we feel the same.....we don't like the constant speed of driving on the interstate and 301 is not at all crowded and it is 4 lanes divided. So this is the preferred route that I like to take. |

I vote for I-75
I prefer I-75 to 301. Perhaps it is because the first time I drove from PA to FL we hit 301 in the middle of the night in a torrential downpour. Rt 301 does NOT have any street lights except the ones of the businesses in the towns you pass through. During our trip in the rain the tractor trailers were driving way too fast on a dark road and I felt really unsafe.
On my second drive to FL we took I-75 and it was much more relaxing. I too agree that it is further out of the way but it was a much easier drive for us. Safe travels! |

That's It
Yep, Tony, really "Waldo". Don't believe me? Google it....they even talk about the speed traps there.

Driven from NC many times down 95. Never take loop around Jacksonville if you time it right never a delay.... Have tried them all. 95 to Route 40 west (Ormand Beach), and then down 19 south to 42 west to 27/441....Two lane from 40 to 441 but pretty quick, 301 is stop and go...Ugh!

Just checking this route out for our ride down next month. I'll be in a 16' rental truck and am considering avoiding the 301 hassle this time.
When you come down thru Ormond Beach then across using 42, do you cut the corner at RT. 25 or go a bit further over to 441 then head south?
