Do you have the actual policy? and what does it say? There are often insurance policies that are at a fixed rate for a certain number of years, or until a certain age, then they adjust. Your recall of what an agent said is not going to be enough for any lawsuit, the written policy is key.

I agree. What you were told by a salesperson means nothing. The only thing that matters is what is written in the policy document.

Contact their customer service department for an explanation.

If you don't get any satisfaction, contact the Department of Insurance

Yes you have to read the policy. This is unusual unless the policy is a term policy for 20 years. Please tell us the type of policy you have. Does the policy have a cash value?
If the increase is not in agreement with the terms of the policy write to your states insurance department for help.

In 1995 in Vero Beach, FL the homeowners' insurance was five grand a year. When we lived in NH, our insurance was tripled a month. The agent explained that it was because of the heavy losses suffered during the hurricane season in FL and elsewhere that year.

I agree with bjeani to get an explanation from the customer service. If nothing from them, then the State Insurance Commission or whatever it is in Florida. If all fails, shop around among different companies. You do have other choices and do not need to stick with that company.

The sales people in an insurance company office are called "agents", but they are not actually agents in the legal sense in that they do not have the power to act on behalf of the insurance company. So, nothing they tell you verbally ever legally commits the company to what they say. This is stated in the fine print of the documents you sign. Really, the only thing that matters at all is what it says in the actual written policy document.

Any insurance is scheme, unless you hire lawyer to interpret the fine print you get screwed. There underlining find print gets them out of paying you. When the federal government makes insurance mandatory, then they should control it, control rates, and fine print. Health insurance good example, IMO it you have any health insurance it should be accepted anywhere in United States. But, due to lobbist and payments under the table to politicians this what we get. They can chose what insurance they want to accept. Basilly insurances is big legal racketeering scheme written by lawyers passed by politicians from under the table pay offers, that how they go to Washington poor and come out years later mult-millionaires.

As for life insurance, once you become old enough and have whole life policies the insurance hit you with the new policy scheme, which may get you some cash in hand now and the fine print screws you later (prudential got in big trouble few years ago screwing people with this scheme) they greased politicians and changed the rule so you get screwed.
