I'm sure these types of questions have been asked many times before in different forms but you all are always so helpful with questions from us "novices". I'm going to buy a golf cart and was looking at a Tyger - the website says it can do 25 mph but never mentions anything about being a "street legal" cart. My question is, are you allowed to have a golf cart that can do that speed and NOT register it as "street legal" if you choose to never drive on the roadways? I certainly don't want to pay the extra 300-400 in insurance costs every year. Thanks for your responses in advance.

If you drive over 20MPH you will get a ticket for an unregistered vehicle. If you don't go over 20 and only use the cart on the golf courses (doubt that will happen) you will be alright.

The law says if it is capable of exceeding 20 MPH it must be registered and insured as a motor vehicle if driven on public roads.

There are very few instances, if any, where you can travel from home to a golf course without driving on public streets. Golf cart lanes are part of public streets.

BTW, a lot of the streets in The Villages are going to have speed limits reduced from 25 MPH to 20 MPH effective in January. You may want to consider this before making a final decision.

1) The cart must meet other criteria as well to be street legal.

2) The cart paths are not part of public streets, but the diamond marked lanes on the roads are.

1. As a matter of fact if it is capable of exceeding 20 MPH and is not properly registered and insured, one could say it is street illegal.

2. Golf cart trails (multimodal) are on private property . I was referring to golf cart lanes that are part of the street.

I believe "golf cart paths" usually refer to those paths on the golf courses. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

what kind of tires are required for a street legal car to be "legal"?

It needs a solid windshield, windshield wiper, seat belts, and probably different tires. And you will have to drive it on a street or leave it in your garage forever. So have them reduce the speed to 20mph, technically it must be 19.8mph, or make sure it is street legal.
