Our little Mr Buster is only 18 years old and is going blind. Has anyone had this surgery on there dog and how did it work?

My daughter and son in law have a Yorkie. When he was 6 months old he needed cataract surgery and they had it done for him. It was perfect! He had no problem recuperating and is now almost 7 years old. We live on Long Island , NY and that is where surgery was done. Good luck!

My biggest concern would be the anesthesia needed at that age - but hopefully your vet will give you the best advice about that. Good luck to Mr. Buster.

Our Cairn Terrier was about 10 when her cataracts showed up. The vet reassured us that she would do fine as long as we didn't start moving furniture around since she knew her environment. She lived to be nearly 14 and never had any problems either at our house or when we visited my parents. Our vet wouldn't do surgery on any dog older than 7 until blood work was done to show that anesthesia was okay. BTW, does anyone know a reliable breeder of Cairns? We miss having a dog and plan to get one in the near future.

My little Lucy (schnauzer) started to get cataracts when she was about 12 and we decided not to put her through that surgery because there was a slight chance the surgery could go wrong and she would be blind. So we chose to let her live her life the way she was. Well she lived to 17 and eventually could not see except shadows but that didn't alter her quality of life. She still loved to play with her brothers and sisters and she had a tremendous appetite. Eventually, her little heart gave out and we did not regret not giving her that surgery.

Thanks for this post. I think we will continue the way things are. Mr Buster is otherwise healthy, but at 18, it might be the best to let well enough alone.
