I'm not sure what PETA has to do with this thread, but the information in your post is very misleading. Your website link led me to this clarification which portrays an entirely different picture.

I'm not even sure that dogs should be recognized as sentient beings. But I am sure that dogs should be treated with respect. Many people regard dogs as "disposable", like a dirty kleenex.

There are hundreds of thousands of dogs that have been surrended to shelters. Some people drop a dog off at a shelter when they have a baby, as "too much work". And some even leave a dog behind in an empty apartment when they move. There are so many stories of severe animal abuse that it's heartbreaking. I won't even discuss them here.

That's French law. I too believe that the law can go too far in other directions. People look for too easy answers when there usually are not any.

Mephistopheles, my older brother Robert's huge tomcat, used to beg for chicken from me. He would stick a claw in my knee from under the table to make sure that I did not forget him. Kind of hard to not notice Mephistopheles especially with a name like that.
