Default K9 Opthamologist

Yep, you read that right!! I'll try to make this as brief as possible and, hopefully someone else might get the benefit of our experience also.

We were told several years ago that one of our dogs has a cataract on her eye and there wasn't much that could be done about it. Well, a few weeks before Christmas, she was having a lot of discharge from that eye and was squinting with it. We took her to the Vildage Vets and they gave us some ointment and told us that if we needed to, we could take her to see a Veterinary Opthamologist. We had never heard of any such thing. As it turned out, she die not improve and we did wind up taking her to the Opthamologist which is down near Orlando. They did an exam and said that she has mineral deposits in her cornea. Gave us some drops and said come back in 3 weeks. In the mean time we had local vet check her calcium level and it is high. We took her back to Orlando yesterday and the VO said that her eye looks better, but still needed to have some drops. She was still keeping that eye half closed most of the time. We did the drops last night and this morning she had her eye open like nothing was wrong.

She will have to remain on some type of drops or ointment for the rest of her life, but if we had not seen the VO, who knows what would have happened to her vision. She's probably not ever going to have full vision in that eye, but she at least acts like it's not bothering her any more.

I anyone needs the name or phone number of the Vet Opthamologist, please PM me and I'll give it to you.

I had never heard of a veterinary opthalmologist either until a few years ago. Our beautiful Gordon Setter had a problem with a continual teary eye and I was recommended to see a VO in Stamford, Conn. She was a very kind and caring doctor and fixed him right up - it was a simple problem with a tear duct.
P.S. I once met a young woman who worked as a dentist for lions and tigers. Guess there are all kinds of medical specialties that we never think of.

Greg, our kitty's opthamologist in Utah recommended an opthamologist near Orlando in case we needed an eye doctor after we moved here. Maybe the same one? Fortunately, kitty's eye problems cleared up with the drops and cream and pills from Utah, so we never visited the Dr. in Orlando. It's amazing what they can do for our pets these days!

I'm sure it's the same place. There couldn't be that many around. Also located down there is a dermatologist and possibly an orthopaedic clinic. There are several buildings, but we were only interested in the opthamologist at the time. Hopefully, we won't need any of the others, but if the other little girl doesn't stop scratching, we may have to check out the dermatologist.

Not to steal your thread but there are vet dentists also. I worked for a lab in Tallahassee and I made gold and also porcelain canine crowns for broken teeth on large dogs. Its a hoot pouring up the impressions and trying to mount them on human articulators.Never had one come back or complaints. woof woof

I worked at a place that let me take my dog to work, and one day a customer's son came in to show me his new braces on his teeth. He was so proud of his new shiny braces, so I showed him the braces on my dog's teeth, and we had a good laugh. Bear had caught his canine on another dog's collar and yanked the tooth loose. The vet dentist wrapped thin wire around his tooth and the teeth next to it, and voila! It healed just fine!
