I almost started a thread on this last week as we were making a road trip through NJ and have a dog.

We did make it through. Caly had to keep her head inside the window just in case.

I have rolled this law around in my head and tried to see this from the other side, but keep coming back to the same thing. Some of our law makers have simply lost all common sense (if they had any) and have no idea their role in the world

After making the commute through NJ, NY, CO, RI and MA, the least of their issues is a pet unrestrained. The driving moves we see driving north east of NJ to MA on route 95 are very scarey.

I have discussed this with our two cats, Mikey, Harry and Hershey and they say that they are gonna pass on New Jersey. Mikey is sobbing. He wanted to see where Frank Sinatra was born.

I bought one of those seat belt things when my dog was a puppy, when the car automatic seat belt tightened up he got plastered to the seat back with his 4 legs sticking straight out-it was comical. Never used it again.

Does this really need to be a law?

When I lived in NJ, I had a pet restraint harness that I used on Bart when we went out during the winter snow weather. Other than that he was unrestrained.

It's just another excuse for collecting $$ without calling it a tax.

Why aren't they passing laws against texting while driving or cell phone usage while driving? Nobody is going to get killed if my dog is not buckled in, unless he's driving.

Supposedly, the basis of the law is that pets not strapped in distract drivers and that is what causes a lot of accidents.

Believe NJ already has laws on the books about texting and cell phone useage while driving.

Default I wonder what Fumar thinks of this NJ law?

I can just imagine what Fumar would write about this NJ law.

Hope the NJ law is well written so that bigger dogs can move around a bit during long drives. Some of the bigger dogs which come to Doggie Doo Run Run are kept in the back area of various makes of cars so that they have little chance of really knocking around. They can still move around a certain amount though.

One of my two cats is angry and says he ain't gonna take it anymore! He wanted me to ask you if your two cats wanted to join him and his partner in starting a new organization for cats only so they can protest auto restraints and raise cash (or Nibbles & Bits) for future litigation. It would be called "Harnesses Iz For Horses; Food Iz For Cats!" Let me know what they say!
