Default Recall of Bailey’s Choice Jerky

Salmonella Threat Leads to Recall of Bailey’s Choice Jerky

A small Georgia pet treat manufacturer is voluntarily recalling two lots of Bailey’s Choice chicken jerky treats that tested positive for salmonella.

The jerky is sold at 24 locations across Georgia, according to the company website. The recalled treats are packaged in bags bearing lot dates June 5, 2013, and Oct. 8, 2013.
"We have had no reports of anyone or any pet becoming sick,” the company stated. "We are working with the [Georgia] Department of Agriculture closely to recall the effected lots.”

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning in pets include lethargy, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. People who handle contaminated pet products may exhibit similar symptoms.
Bailey’s Choice chicken jerky is sourced and made in the United States.

Jerky produced in China has come under scrutiny since 2007 for a possible link to hundreds of pet deaths and thousands of illnesses.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported in October that its ongoing investigation of jerky complaints had uncovered few new clues. The agency asked veterinarians and pet owners to assist in the investigation by continuing to file complaints about suspected jerky-related illnesses in pets.
