Talking My experiences... albeit odd

Nice article.

I am a slightly different about the 'come' command. There are only two commands that my dogs must understand, come and stay. When the command come is uttered, the dog must come.

This comes from hard work when I get the dog. After the dog understand the command, my technique gets a bit odd. We lived in a lot where we had about an acre in the back yard, surrounded by woods, no neighbors. I would stand on the back deck and Caly would be sniffing out by the woods or whatever. I would holler (I say holler as she was pretty far away) 'Caly' to get her attention, the I would issue 'Come'.

If she did not, I would run off the deck out to where she was, sometimes surprising her as she was distracted. We would have a quick chat, where I would say come when you are called, no punishment, I would walk 10 feet away and say "come" and she would jaunt over where she was rewarded verbally "good come" or sometimes with a treat.

My wife would make fun of me as I looked like a nut

After time as Caly grew, I would be in the house and I would hear my lovely wife yelling come, pause, come, pause, come up to 8 times. When I counted up to 7 or 8 I would walk out and in a calm voice ‘holler’ "Caly", pause for a second, and then Come. In she would come…. oh the looks I got

Also #4 is a great technique someone taught me years ago when learning to leash train. Take dog to large area on a leash and without speaking randomly change directions, giving a slight tug when dog does not follow. It is amazing how quickly the dog starts watching YOU for signals of where you are headed without ever uttering a word…

After Caly goes, I am not sure I have the energy to do all of that again…. time will tell

The only thing that crushes my spirit is being told not to sleep on the bed or furniture, what's the point of having furniture if you are not going to use it?

Funny. My pooch certainly spends a lot of time on furniture or laps of people on furniture.
