Default Seeking advice from Cat Owners

I live in a Courtyard Villa and have not let my cat outside in the two years I have had him.
However, his lust for geckos has recently made him go through my lanai screen to get outside.

My question is about fleas. (I have Frontline but have not needed it.)
If you have a cat that is allowed outside, do you have a flea problem?

Thanks....

I walk my cat every evening (he loves the geckos). Often he sits down on the grass. He is pure white so I know I would spot fleas, but so far none. When I moved here I told our pest person I have cats and he sprayed for fleas. This was two years ago. I do not worry about fleas, but I do worry about mosquitos since I understand they can cause heart worm in cats. I do not have my cats on any preventative medicine (Frontline, etc). He loves going outside and waits for me to take him every evening!

Be careful with cats and geckos - my vet told me they (the geckos) carry salomonella and if the eat the geckos, even if it's just a taste, the cat can become very ill

We let our cat out every night in the back yard. She spends hours out there just enjoying the day. Please let your cat in the back yard and seal off the gate with a wire type of fencing (shelving) that I use. The dogs just love her out there. take care Kar guy

My beloved cat died from eating geckos. Her liver was destroyed.

JBlum,

I am so sorry to hear that.

Island gal,

I would check with your vet. I would not let my cats out without flea protection. We occasionally take Miss Claudie out on the leash.

We had fleas once in Connecticut - it took nearly a year to get rid of them.

I am so sorry jblum.

We don't let the kitty fellows outside...ever, but those little geckos get onto the lanai. I saw a dead one without a foot last time.

Chelsea? What does Vetman say about cats eating geckos?

And....everyone? How can we gecko proof the lanai???

jblum, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss but you've made me think that maybe that's what happened to my oldest schnauzer, he was fine the night before but in the morning, he was so sick and the vet said his liver was totally non-functioning and he passed away that afternoon. :-( Maybe he ate a gecko on my lanai??? GG is right, how do we keep the geckos out of our lanais? Any ideas?

Thanks Kate. That's his picture as my avatar. He passed away 2 weeks ago and I'm still crying, of course. But it was so sudden that I couldn't figure out what happened to him so now I know, maybe... He was 14 so he had a very good life, I just miss him a lot.

Kathie,

I'm so sorry to hear that your beloved dog passed away.
I can only imagine your pain. I had no idea that geckos were so toxic but that would explain his sudden death.

Of course you do Kathie. I am so sorry. Those little furry folks are people.
Fourteen years is a long time. I know he had a wonderful life.
