Does anyone know of something I can give my Shi-tzu who has been having seizures about once a month now....if I bring him to the Vet, they want an arm and a leg for testing before they give him anything. He's 9 1/2

Our dog had seizures on the average of 2 a year and gradually became more. We recently started him on seizure medication and seen an improvement. We hated to do it because once they start on it they have to stay on it. The testing and monitoring of the drug levels can be expensive and necessary. If you're not present when your dog has one it can be very dangerous for them for health and safety reasons. Wishing the best.

Although they charge a lot for the test they want to be positive about the cause of the seizures. Protects your dog from improper treatment and the vet from misdiagnosing the problem. When you do find the right meds please shop around even if you have to order online.

Would you be able to tell me what you do buy online?

Seizure medication requires a prescription. Once you have a prescription form your vet you can check the different online animal pharmacies. They will not sell seizure medication without a prescription from your vet. Please take your dog to the vet.

We had a dog who was on phenobarbital to control her seizures. It worked well but it's not a do-it-yourself treatment. The vet needs to make the diagnosis and it is a prescription medication. She was monitored by the vet for the correct level in her blood. The prescription was less expensive to buy at a regular pharmacy than from the vet. We used the Target pharmacy.
At first the dog was a little groggy but that passed and she seemed fine. The good thing was that it did a good of controlling her seizures.

We have an 11 year old yellow lab who has been on phenobarbital since 2008. It is the definite answer to controlling seizures but does require annual checkups to make sure of the impact on their kidneys. It is worth the vet bill to get the dog on track to be seizure free.

Here is our story....may or may not apply to your dog. Our dog never had seizures. Then one day after we had changed her dog food she had one. About a week later she had another. The vet said not to worry unless she started having several or they lasted more than 5 minutes. I started trying to remember anything and everything that we had done recently (before she had the first one). I made my mental list of what those things were. I ruled out things. The one big thing was that we had changed her dog food. We ended up changing her dog food...including the brand, the protein source, and the vegetable. No more seizures.
I read that all dogs are prone to seizures. Most have a high tolerance and so never have a seizure. Some dogs have a much lower tolerance for their trigger and they seize. So the dog food was probably fine for other dogs, but my dog had a low tolerance for an ingredient in it. So if this is something that just started recently, you might try to think of anything you fed your dog differently or something you started using around your house that is different, or something you've done differently to try to figure out if it is something you change to stop the seizures without having to revert to putting your dog on medication. |

There is also a holistic vet in the area. I don't have his name, but I think Barefoot does.
