You might want to check out Gleneden in Virginia. This is the kennel that started the breed and coined the name "cavachon" (bichon cavachon is redundant--it is a mixed breed of bichon frise and King Charles cavalier). Gleneden has a great reputation, is not a puppy mill and stands behind their pups.
Be sure that you can see both parents and get their health records, especially of the King Charles since they are known to frequently have severe heart conditions. |

If you contact the American Kennel Club, they will send you a list of all AKC recognized breeders for whichever breed you desire. I simply went to their website and contacted the president.

The bischon cavachon is not an AKC recognized breed. If the poster of this thread googles the name, she will find many choices.

Agreed. It is of the mixed-breed variety. People are mixing these breeds now, calling them designer dogs, and charging an arm and a leg for them. Used to be called backyard breeding. Be aware of what the breeder is doing, especially since Cavs (bless their darling, pea-pickin' hearts) can have heart issues.

A little off topic so forgive me. But I will never buy a pure bred again. Not only do they generally have some significant medical issue but there are way too many sitting in the shelters and being euthanized. In fact, I imagine you can contact bichon rescues that have this type of bichon if your heart is set on one.

Sorry, but pure bred dogs have no more "significant medical issues" than mixed breed dogs. I have had both (pure bred and mixed breed) for most of my life and there is no real difference. It's mostly the luck of the draw. While some pure bred dogs have issues inherent to the breed, you don't know what will turn up in a mixed breed because you don't know it's heritage or what makes up their gene pool. A true breeder will breed for the betterment of the breed and knows the lineage of the dog and bitch and knows their genetic history. If they don't know that, you don't want to buy a dog from them.

Bonanza, I respectfully disagree. Although breeders try their best, and many have no issues, it has become more and more difficult to outbreed because issues e,g, hip, seizures, etc. have become so pervasive throughout.
I don't know that you can go from personal ownership opinion but I have had seven mixed breeds (all different quasi breeds from large to small) but only one purebred and guess which one had an issue. |

We may not be able to change the life for all the dogs in all the shelters and rescues but you will definitely change the life for the one you take home. Good luck with the rescues and shelters. Hope you find your new best friend.
