Where I grew up in Central Ohio it was considered good luck to cook Pork with sauerkraut to eat on New Years Day.
One of our guests this year is bringing black eyed peas to be assured of her Texas luck for the new year.
What cooking tradition do you remember and perhaps will cook to start off 2015?????

Being from Florida, it will be black-eyed peas with ham hocks and cornbread.
We used to make them fresh in a bean pot but since I am the only one that eats them anymore, it is a can of Bush's Black-eyed peas. Cornbread is still fresh.

Field peas, collard greens, corn bread, and ham. Mix the corn bread with the greens...using plenty of broth...to make "Pot Liquor" aka "Pot Likker."

Filet Mignon from Fresh Market - asparagus and maybe some home made fries, and something really fattening for dessert!

Yep. Hoppin john, we call it....
We are having a traditional "Italian/Southern" meal. Lentil soup, pork with sauerkraut and apples, black eyed peas, collard greens and Italian green beans with onions and tomatoes with fresh peach cobbler for dessert! Each course has a special meaning connected to health, wealth and happiness. Peach cobbler because it tastes so darn good!

I honestly thought everyone did pork and sauerkraut for good luck. I put everything in a crockpot and the kids roll through during the day to eat.
I learn so much on this forum! I'm going to run out today to make this too. Food never goes to waste in this house. The kids always take containers of food home with them and this will be something new for all of us.
Great thread!

With all the cooking & baking from Thanksgiving to Christmas & beyond, by the time New Years Day rolls around......we & most people we know opt for Chinese Takeout. It is popular in New England to just rest up on New Year's Day.....no cooking.
We get enough for lots of leftovers for days to come. Set it out as a buffet; use strong paper plates. Give the dishwasher a rest.
So, when you don't want to cook, what is the easy solution? Takeout, of course. Chinese is our favorite takeout.
As far as having good luck, we feel we've been blessed with plenty of good luck throughout our 50 years of marriage, as have our 4 children (including their spouses here) plus our six grandchildren plus hopefully the great grandchild "to be" will also have the same good fortune..........so Chinese it is.
I'm looking forward to not cooking or cleaning up. We are looking forward to another great year, 2015. A milestone for us as we both turn 70 & celebrate our 50th anniversary. We've been fortunate indeed.
NOT LOOKING AT THE TAKEOUT MENU WHICH IS UPSTAIRS........BUT, FROM MEMORY.....SOME OF THE THINGS WE WILL CALL IN TO "PICK UP".....
Pot stickers (dumplings)
Chinese Barbecue Spareribs
Shanghai Egg Rolls (the slimmer ones)
Fried Shrimp Appetizer
Fried Rice
Lo Mein
Mei Fun Noodles (very thin) Vegetarian style
Vegetarian Chow Mein with Broccoli
Orange Chicken
General Tso's Chicken
Cashew Chicken
Beef with Broccoli
Curry chicken
White rice comes with all of the above main dish quarts
BEN & JERRY'S ICE CREAM FOR DESSERT
HAPPY 2015 TO ALL........WE WISH YOU THESE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT...
PEACE OF MIND, EASE OF HEALTH, IMMENSE HAPPINESS & JOY..
GOOD FORTUNE IN YOUR "FORTUNE COOKIES"........
