Default Homestead Exemption

My SO and I purchased a home in TV in April. We are listed as Joint Tenants w/Rights of Survivorship on the deed. Next week I am going to register as a legal resident of Florida (DL, voter registration, etc), but my SO is going to remain an Ohio resident until our house sells. Can I alone file for the Homestead Exemption Tax on our Florida home? I did check some government websites and it seems to me this can be done. BTW, he is the sole owner of our Ohio home and I believe he will have a Homestead exemption on that house next year. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks!

When I read your question I thought of the following article that was recently published in the Florida Bar Journal, a monthly publication that is delivered to all attorneys that are licensed in the State of Florida. Bar Journal Article

This article lays out in great detail the homestead law related to property taxes.
