I had a self directed ira investment with Retirement Evolution that as a result of an SEC investigation went into receivership 5 years ago, the attorneys are now starting to release the funds and I need to be sure I do the rollover correctly. The self directed ira still shows value with Inspiria Financial and I will be direct depositing the funds into Vanguard instead of Inspiria. I would prefer someone in the Villages area. I appreciate any help so I can move on from this mistake.

If you are doing a direct deposit into a Vanguard IRA, that is a direct IRA transfer, not a rollover. If Vanguard is your IRA custodian, why not just allow Vanguard to handle the transfer. They will be responsible for the legal transfer of IRA funds with no tax consequences.

Your financial guy should ensure the rollover goes correctly, after all that how they make money.

Note that an IRA rollover is when you take possession of the funds and you have 60 days to redeposit the funds with another IRA custodian. This is risky. If Vanguard is your current IRA custodian, they have a direct transfer form that you can sign giving them the right to transfer the funds to them. This is a better and safer way to go. You shouldn't need an attorney to do a direct transfer. If Vanguard is not your current IRA custodian, then set up an IRA with Vanguard and then sign the direct IRA transfer form.
