I wonder--has the quality of the end result--students who can actually enter college without having to take a bunch of remedial courses first--actually improved? |

Try looking at the refurbished computers at HP, DELL, maybe even open box Best Buy or Costco. A desktop is not that expensive.
I too remove all of my hard drives before I donate. A refurb with a hd would be more useful I'm guessing. The computer should also be capable of running newer OS in addition to the software he/she is using. |

Check with the computer store on 301 right next to the Wildwood Village Hall. He usually has some used computers for a good price.

I can provide a Windows 11 desktop with integrated graphics. I don't have a dedicated graphics card. The CPU is an AMD Athlon 3000G. 8 GB DDR4 memory. 128 GB solid state drive, and an 80 GB hard drive (the kind that spins). I ask that you pay $10 for a Windows 11 license.
If interested let me know if the student would like to have an open source software pre-loaded, such as the Adobe-like GIMP or Libre Office. |

Never, ever give someone a older computer UNLESS you have completely wipe hard drives and memory. Best way to do this is reinstall operating system. Otherwise a computer knowledgeable person could access you personal information

One kicker here is a "dedicated GPU", presumably for number crunching, which is going to run the cost up. This needs more information. Is the "dedicated GPU" a minimum requirement or "desirable" and same for other specs? There are software MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS and PREFERRED specifications. Since this project is a "one-off", I would not get more than the minimum requirements. I would think the school would have computer labs; I thought that was almost standard these days. TV has computer clubs, so I'd start there and only get what you NEED for this one-off project.

Never heard back from the OP with more details? As for selling or giving away a PC the simplest solution if you are concerned about data on the storage drives is to remove them. A new 500gb ssd only costs about $20. Personally, I have also reformatted mine and installed a free version of Windows. The FBI could still uncover data if they wanted from such a wiped drive but most people are not the FBI.

A Mac is very expensive as are iPads. The type of hardware this student needs depends on what he is using the computer for. |
