Interesting! I'm glad the poster used "typically". I hail from Minnesota, where most students, as I understand it, are given a shiny new iPad for use at school AND at home. Some few get the cheaper tablets, and in years past desktops were also handed out...all, of course, courtesy of the taxpayers of Minnesota.

I wonder--has the quality of the end result--students who can actually enter college without having to take a bunch of remedial courses first--actually improved?

Try looking at the refurbished computers at HP, DELL, maybe even open box Best Buy or Costco. A desktop is not that expensive.
I too remove all of my hard drives before I donate. A refurb with a hd would be more useful I'm guessing. The computer should also be capable of running newer OS in addition to the software he/she is using.

Default Used Computer

Check with the computer store on 301 right next to the Wildwood Village Hall. He usually has some used computers for a good price.

My thoughts exactly!
Even Ocala National Forest kids have easy access to many in their school libraries.

Default Windows 11 desktop

I can provide a Windows 11 desktop with integrated graphics. I don't have a dedicated graphics card. The CPU is an AMD Athlon 3000G. 8 GB DDR4 memory. 128 GB solid state drive, and an 80 GB hard drive (the kind that spins). I ask that you pay $10 for a Windows 11 license.

If interested let me know if the student would like to have an open source software pre-loaded, such as the Adobe-like GIMP or Libre Office.

Default Never

Never, ever give someone a older computer UNLESS you have completely wipe hard drives and memory. Best way to do this is reinstall operating system. Otherwise a computer knowledgeable person could access you personal information

One kicker here is a "dedicated GPU", presumably for number crunching, which is going to run the cost up. This needs more information. Is the "dedicated GPU" a minimum requirement or "desirable" and same for other specs? There are software MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS and PREFERRED specifications. Since this project is a "one-off", I would not get more than the minimum requirements. I would think the school would have computer labs; I thought that was almost standard these days. TV has computer clubs, so I'd start there and only get what you NEED for this one-off project.

Never heard back from the OP with more details? As for selling or giving away a PC the simplest solution if you are concerned about data on the storage drives is to remove them. A new 500gb ssd only costs about $20. Personally, I have also reformatted mine and installed a free version of Windows. The FBI could still uncover data if they wanted from such a wiped drive but most people are not the FBI.

Chrome books are cheaper and what was supplied to students during the Covid lockdowns in NYC. The kids had to work remotely and that’s what they were given to use.

A Mac is very expensive as are iPads.

The type of hardware this student needs depends on what he is using the computer for.

Can you tell me if there is somewhere that we could rent or borrow
Or buy a used one if not too expensive the following computer needs for him.

I am quoting his email because he’s the computer geek not me!

According to the software I am planning to use, the requirements for simulations are any CPU that is "Pentium® 4 2.0 GHZ or Athlon® 2000+ or faster, 64-bit (x64) processor",
It also asks for 8 gb of RAM (memory), for the graphics, it asks for "A dedicated NVIDIA GPU card", any NVIDIA cards after 2013 perhaps work.
The website also states that this graphics card (GPU) should have at least 4 gb RAM and recommended 8 gb.
Finally, for space it asks for a minimum 25 gb of storage in a hard drive, this is found in almost any computer by default.
Any amount of time to use this computer would be appreciated, an optimal time period would be about 2-4 months.

As you can see this is a dedicated student who needs support in finding the computer. Thank you
You can have this one. works well with LinuxMint desktop. See if the student can substitute a Linux software version for his project.
