Default Preserving Photographs

We have many, many bins of photographs. I would like to scan them, label them and copy them to CD's. What is the best way to do this? Any other suggestions are welcome. The important thing for me is to be able to label the photos.

We purchased a relatively inexpensive scanner/printer combo from Best Buy. It's an HP. It comes with scanning software. It's fairly simple, just lay your photo on the scanner bed, close the lid, and hit the scan button. After it's scanned you can crop it, rename the file to identify it, etc...It's a good bit of work if you have a lot of photos. It took us several sessions to scan ours all in. We did our slides also, but that was with a different kind of scanner.

I've been doing this project for my parents...40+years of photos. Using a scanner and doing them at 300dpi. A good thing to have is a scanner that can do automatic color correction. Also I label a year folder and you can break them into additional folders inside of it. I have a portable drive I'm backing them up on and also on my Facebook page that way I have two places I can recover them from if something happens. Just remember...takes time....lots of time....
