Default An Annoying Computer Issue

Another computer issue that is not serious, but annoying. When my computer is woken up after sleep, sometimes the ethernet connection is immediately available and sometimes it takes 7 or 8 minutes to get re-established. This was not always the case but has been happening for perhaps the last 10 or 12 months.

I have a DSL modem and a Realtek PCIe Family Controller network adapter. The driver for the network adapter is up to date. When the ethernet connection is not available and I run Windows Network Diagnostics, it tells me there is no ethernet cable plugged in. Without doing anything, if I wait long enough, the connection comes back.

For the Realtek controller, I have set the power management so that this device is NOT turned off when the computer goes to sleep. I have also looked on the internet and the only advice I can find is to change the controller Speed & Duplex setting from "Auto Negotiation" to "100 Mbps Full Duplex". Making this change does not solve the problem of sometimes having no ethernet connection when the computer wakes up.

Of course, if I restart the computer, or if I restart the modem, the connection comes right back. I'm thinking this issue may be the result of some past Windows update, or perhaps something Norton Anti-Virus is doing.

Has anybody else encountered this problem, or have any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thanks very much, and MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Bob

First thing I would do is check to see if you have the most current drivers for the modem and reinstall the drivers.

Check the power management settings on the card itself. I never put my computer to sleep, just have the monitor turned off, as the is what usually uses the most energy.

Not sure if you have a HP computer but HP Connection Manager has been known to cause these problems.
A re-install of this program might help.

You may follow these suggestions:
Step 1:
Uninstall HP Connection Manager from programs and features, follow the steps in the link:
“Uninstall or change a program”
Uninstall or change a program - Microsoft Windows Help
Step 2:
After above step download and install HP Connection Manager from the link:
