I am a neophyte when it comes to the computer and all things.

I keep getting a message with the Explorer E logo telling ,me I need to up date my media player. I am afraid to accept this software as I can't tell the difference between being helped or being taken.

How can I differentiate between the good and the evil doers?

Don't do it. Get Windows Media Player or I-Tunes and set it to do automatic updates and ignore all the other stuff telling you what you need.
