Default I just bought a new HP Laptop

I bought a customized HP laptop from the Hewlett Packard website and found out this morning that it was being shipped directly to me from China. Not sure how I feel about that. I didn't even think about it at the time I purchased it but when I received the notification this morning from Fed X it was being shipped from China I was surprised.

I got a Toshiba from China and it had been damaged in shipping - I think the compartment for the hard drive was opened for inspection by someone. Anyhow it had been damaged. The replacement came with the battery compartment incorrectly shut, but I was able to fix it. Bottom line: look it over carefully when it arrives.

I feel your quandry....

I`m about done with these spinning hard drive machines. I swore by the Vaio and was also pretty pleased with my Satellite but was finally forced to evaluate and did end up purchasing after long consideration a custom solid state system with great expansion capability.

Too soon to tell yet about overall performance and longevity because its new this week but I like it so far and it is much faster and with superior sound than anything I`ve ever used.

Wishing you the best of luck with your new systems!

Thanks I've got my fingers crossed. It should arrive Thursday. I will check it over to see if it looks disturbed. I also maxed out the memory on this one to 16 gig. That should do me for a while. I've been limping along with only 4 gig and getting very frustrated. A couple of programs I installed don't work properly because of the memory shortage. Can't wait to get it.

Yeah..there`s always that great feeling of anticipation waiting for that new machine to arrive. I`m constantly looking out the window when I think I hear UPS coming down the street

Give us a critique..now I`m curious because I`m looking for a more portable higher capacity system for testing to take on the road.

Seems like not very long ago when I was satisfied with my 500M processing Vaio. Its still pretty quick when just using it for general research.

I received the new laptop a few days ago and really like it. It isn't small, but I love the 17" screen. I'd say it weighs about 5 lbs, but I like the size. The one thing that I really like is the fingerprint scanner. After you register your index fingerprint you no longer have to log on to the computer. You just run you finger over the little scanner and you are logged on. It is so nice. I'm so far limping around on the Windows 8. I downloaded the shell for windows 7 and am not sure if I like it or not. I can't seem to move around well between the web pages I keep open all the time like TOTV, google, and my mail. It seems cumbersome. The computer seems plenty fast though and I have downloaded the programs already that were giving me trouble on the old machine and everything is working well. Here is the link to the computer I bought. I did get it cheaper on the HP website. Fingerprint login...hmmm. I`m curious.

Did it come with 8 or 8.1? I had read that 8 users would be able tio download 8.1 for free and is supposed to be somewhat easier.

Haven`t heard a good comment about 8 yet. The one I just got still had 7, upgradable to 8. Think I`m going to stay with 7 as long as possible, just like I did XP.

Does it sound like I don`t like change???

It came with 8.0. I couldn't order it with Windows 7 so I had no choice. The windows 8 takes a little getting used to. The first day I couldn't find the control panel anywhere. Finally did a youtube video about it and all you do is start typing on the start screen and all kinds of apps come up including the control panel. It's really quite convenient. There is an icon on the start screen for the desktop so I use that and google chrome most of the time. So far I'm glad I got it although occasionally I get stuck but you just press the windows button on the keyboard and you're back at the start page. There is a bit of a learning curve, but I'm ok with it. The thumbprint scanner is the best. Just a minor setup and you're good to go.
