Default Retrieving files from deleted trash on Mac

I emptied my trash and need to find a deleted file. I have a Mac OS X (macbook)?

I'm no computer expert but I'm pretty sure the Apple guy told me that all files can be retrieved from the trash bin UNTIL you empty it. Hope someone can tell you otherwise!

Unless you have been running Time Machine, as Frank suggests above, retrieving a deleted file is complicated. Depending upon how long you have been using the computer, since deletion, it might be impossible to recover the file.

It might be easier to focus on other places the file might be located...

Where did the file come from originally?
- Did you create it or did someone send it to you ?
Did you receive the file in an email?
- It might still be in your online email account
Did you ever email the file to anyone else?
- Maybe they still have it...

Just my initial thoughts . . .
