I approach computer repairs conservatively. If it isnt broken, dont fix it.
I always wait before I upgrade browsers. You will know when it is time. You will either be required to upgrade by IE, or some webpages will no longer load properly.
I use Firefox primarily. If you like to customize your browsing experience, firefox is better hands down. The Addons are great.

It is smart to have a backup browser on your computer in case IE bombs permanently. You can use the backup to fix IE or just switch to it.

For that purpose I recommend Firefox portable, and plain Firefox in that order.

Why worry about 8? 9 Beta is out and it is a very good product. Not as good as Chrome, but not bad.

I upgraded to IE8 a while ago and am very happy with it. If you are happy with IE7 stay with it until they quit supporting it (Security fixes and all).

It has been a while since I had IE7 so I do not know all of the changes that came with IE8. Maybe you could do a search and find out what the upgrades were and see if it is worth the upgrade.

Personally, I try to keep up with the latest levels because of the changes and improved security enhancements. If you skip a release, sometimes the changes you missed are embedded in the new release and it takes a while to figure them out.

I will wait until IE9 comes out of beta and is offered as part of the Windows Update scenario. And then I will wait two-three months for the bugs to be worked out before I download it and install it.

When IE8 first came out it had some flaws. Now it is a proven product. On the other hand be cautious about using the beta IE9
