Default Network problems

Believe it or not in the past 3 weeks I just had 2 guys (who advertise in the Daily Sun) try to connect my laptop to my desktop (ie shared computer) so I can print from one printer and NEITHER ONE could do it. Both computers are IBM and work of of Windows XP Home edition. Here I am trying to use the technologies available (of which I admit I donot understand) but I could have bought a separate printer for the laptop for what this is costing me.

Default Networking With Home Edition

You may want to check and see if XP Home edition supports networking in that manner. Microsoft does some strange things with some of their products. I will have to try and find a compassion chart of the differences between Home Edition and Pro.

XP Home supports printing. When I set up my printing I had a problem with Norton but I think that has been fixed now. From the tower (main system) set up the printer for sharing. Then on the laptop look at the network devices and if you see the printer, share it. Should work.

If not, shut down Norton and see if you can connect.

To answer the questions asked.

Problem still not fixed and I have spent as much money to ry and get a network established than a new printer would have cost me.

XP home edition does support networking.

I am using AVG virus protection.

I am using a wireless router and I have taken off all encription when trying to connect the network.

Im just taking a break right now (to get over my frustrations) and will try again later....or simply buy a printer!

Everyone tells me this should be easy...but its like trying to do my taxes!

I found this on Canon's website.
Instructions for sharing Pixma 450 and similar printers It shows how to share from xp home to xp home, professional, vista. XP Home starts about 1/3 the way down the page.
If both computers can get on the internet at the same time, then these instructions should work. caution that windows firewall may need to be modified to accomplish this.
If you have problems, let me know.

Oops, link didnt work. on the page that shows up, there is a search box 1/2 the way down. type in "share printer" on the results page, it should be solution #2

I have one printer and with a router can print from either my desktop or laptop. Suggest you look into getting a router.

Default Wireless network set-ups & computer help

Try calling a guy named Roger who is a Villager and a retired Infomation Technology guy. He's very knowledgable and set up my entire wireless system for 1 laptop, 1 desktop, 2 printers, a scanner and a digital camera base. Reasonable fees and extremely knowledgable. If he can't fix your problem...no charge. His phone number is 352 638-2954. He also helped me in buying all my equipment as I did not have a clue of what to buy. Highly recommended.
