I have had this problem twice this month. Can receive e-mail, not send. Get the message, " 550 5.7.1 Relaying denied. Proper authentication required."
Toshiba all in one computer - 2 years old - Outlook 2007, POP 3 server I changed the outgoing port to 587 on advice from Comcast about a month ago. That has been working and sending email works on my netbook computer. Earlier this month this happened and the problem corrected itself after 3 days. Can anyone help?

Type the error message into Google and you will get a number of hits on solutions and how to correct it. VG |

I did key the message into Google and unfortunately none of the responses worked. It is so frustrating, particularly when my netbook computer works with the same settings. One of the responses in Google said that it could be caused by 3rd party software or by add-ins. I ran Malware Bytes and Microsoft Security Essentials and there were no problems. I also did a system restore. Nothing is working.

I got a Malware attack a couple of days ago and quickly restored my computer to an earlier date and it seemed to work. I understand your frustration.

Finally solved the problem by rechecking one of the authentication boxes. Gracie, my husband says that the spam emails are likely from someone who just got a hold of my email address on the Internet such as Facebook and are not from my computer. Sorry about that. I get several of those from friends and fortunately can usually detect them easily.

Try this. In Outlook click on Tools and then Account Settings. If there is more than one e-mail account listed highlight the e-mail account you are having problems with and click on it. The line should turn blue. Next click on the change icon right above the e-mail window. A window will come up that has your user name, e-mail address, Account type (POP 3) and the names of your incoming and outgoing e-mail servers. Most settings here would be pop-server.xxxx.yyyy.com and smtp-server.xxxx.yyyy.com. Next you will have your user name that is used to log onto the e-mail account and below it you will have a place for your password. Under that make sure remember Password is checked and Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is Unchecked. On that same screen hit the test account settings button. If things are working it will show you the results. If no this may be where you are receiving the error message. Okay close out the test window and you should be back to the Change E-mail Account window. Make sure all the settings here are correct. Now click on the More settings button. Under the General tab you should have only the name of your e-mail account. In my case it is my e-mail address. Next click on the Outgoing Server tab. This screen is very important in the settings as it controls how the outgoing mail is handled. On this screen you should have ONLY My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication AND Log on to incoming mail server before sending mail CHECKED. On the Connections tab all that should be checked it Connect using my local area network (LAN) and nothing else. On the final tab the Advanced tab here is where you entered the 587 port. My settings have the incoming server (POP3) set at port 110. Your port may be different but since you are able to receive e-mails leave the setting unchanged. NO other items are checked and the line that says Use the following type of encryption connection is set to none. When done click OK and it will take you back to the Change E-mail Account window and here you will want to hit the Test Account Settings button again. If everything is set correctly you will receive an e-mail titled Microsoft Office Outlook Test Message. One thing I have found in Outlook over the years is that you may make a change on one of the settings tabs and it will require you to make changes on other tabs. Give this a try and let us know how things work out. VG |

VG, Thanks so much. Finally discovered that the outgoing server requires authentication had somehow become unchecked. I am using 110 and 587 ports. It is now working. Hard to fathom why it just stops working when I've done nothing to "uncheck" the box. It seems to have unchecked itself. Again thanks for your response.

Glad you got it working. Like I said one of the odd things about Outlook 2007 is that you may make a change on one of the tabs and it will make a change on another tab any the user does not even know it. This problem has happened to me while I was traveling for my previous company and I had run across it before doing third level tech support. I am not sure if Outlook 2010 or 2013 corrected that problem or not. Again glad to see that it is working, VG |
