Sleep Mode Lockout

I find that if my desktop goes into sleep mode the screen goes black while the cursor pointer is visible and moveable but the screen is locked in this mode. I am moved to do a forced shut down?

Try ctl, alt, delete to see if you can log in.

Could it be something to do with your power settings or power options?
