Default I phone question....

It is my understanding that texting from one Iphone to another Iphone can be done with no additional texting charges. Am I correct? Just started using that feature and noticed on my phone bill, I've had charges for this. Verizon is my carrier and I just wondered if my assumptions about texting are correct. Will call Verizon later today to find out what the heck is going on.

You can text any phone using some of the free apps. Otherwise you have to pay.

Pooh.... Yes, you are correct...sort of ...

Free texting is specific to iMessage, which is a part of iOS 5. If both iPhones are using iOS 5 and iMessage, texting is free - worldwide. If I'm not mistaken, you'll have to use the same ID as they used for iCloud or their AppleID. For many, it's the same as the phone number; for others, it's not.

Once you get it working, it works great. If you'd like to test it with me, PM me and we can get it working pretty quickly.

I knew it was specific to 5, Mike, I have iOS5.1, and was surprised to find messaging charges on my phone bill. I had assumed that my son had upgraded to 5. Daughter in law had, but son....not. Friends also hadn't upgraded I discovered...they were still at 4.28 or whatever the number was. They are now upgrading and son will do so also.

I've been texting with reckless abandon these days to friends and family with Iphones, not even considering that they might not have upgraded... From what I've read and I have this rather large book on Iphones, (husband Mike just got i4s), if I've read correctly, you can use phone # or e-mail....but I'm not ABSOLUTELY SURE on that.

I went to the Verizon store near Walmart with my question and they really didn't know much about iphone texting with iMessage. As a matter of fact, they had no idea that it existed. I generally go to the store near Radio Shack in Lady Lake on 441...they seem to have more info on each phone and iphones in particular, but I was headed to Walmart so I thought I'd just stop at the nearby store.

Thank you for your kind offer....I've had messaging working for a bit, now just have to make sure I'm sending to recipients who also have the same operating system. Don't generally text so don't have a data plan that includes it...iMessaging was like a little gift from Apple...I just want to make sure it's really a freebie and not more $$ for Verizon because I'm doing something wrong. Texting without a plan isn't inexpensive and since I only text my kids and family, and they all have Iphones, well....if they upgrade their OS, they save, too... ....they can save data for those they text on different types of phones.

If your text bubble is blue, it is free if it is green it is going to someone not on ios5. At least that is the way it is on AT&T.

That isn't the case with my iMessage...everyone I text have different color bubbles and so are mine... Some are green, some are blue, some are gray, etc....

Just an FYI... On the iPhone, going into Settings --> Messages and set SMS to No and you will not accidently send any text messages that will cause you to pay charges. After you set that parameter, if you try to send a text message to someone that isn't on iOS5, the message will fail to go and you will see a "1" next to the bubble.

If you want free text messaging, get a free Google Voice phone number and use the Google Voice app to send text messages...free to anyone in the US. There are other advantages to having a Google Voice number too...

As a devoted non-tester, may I ask:

What on earth are you all talking about?

Call your grandkids anyone between 8 and 12 can tell you in 60seconds or less. You just have to get over the "look" when they tell you in that cute voice SEE how simple that was.

$10 per mo at Verizon gets you 1000 text messages.

It is usually carrier to carrier the type of phone never has anything to do with it. Check with your carrier (the phone company you pay each month) As a retired ATT manager I can tell you they have hundreds of service plans and depending what month you signed up for that plan the rules are different and changing all the time.

Sorry, but in the case of the iPhone, it DOES matter which phone you're using.

The iPhone with iOS5 has an app called iMessage, which allows the user to text with another like iPhone for free - worldwide. The iPhone [and iPads] also have Facetime, which will allow video chat for free - also worldwide.

You gotta love Apple.... I just wish I had a few thousand shares of their stock!
