Question Computer Speed

Ran a speed test on my computer because it seems to be a little pokey lately. Results were:
Download Speed: 1464 kbps (183KB/sec. transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 283 kbps (35.4KB/sec transfer rate).

Latency: 148 MS

I have no idea what this means. Is it good? My modem says "Embarq" so it's several years old. Don't know if that has any bearing on the results. Thank you.

Don't know what you're paying for but your speeds do not seem sufficient to do any heavy duty data pushing such as Netfix, online gaming, etc.!

I work for a large company with a great many work-at-home employees and we contract for minimum of 512 kbps upload speeds. Download speeds are always a good multiple higher than UL Speeds.

This contracted speed is sufficient for all corporate service we need our WAH people to have: Streaming video, Voice over IP Telephones, etc.

You may need to see what level of service you are paying for and if that is what you are receiving, an upgrade of service may be called for.

Hope this helps.

My initial question was prompted because I cannot watch a video link or youtube video without constant stopping & starting or sticking. It is very frustrating and I usually just "x" out of the whole thing and, therefore, never get to see the whole video.

Bottom line is:
  • Your internet speed is TOO Slow,
  • You may paying for faster speed than you are getting,
  • You should check with your internet provider to make sure you are getting what you are paying for and upgrade your service if necessary to view video!

Good luck

My Centurylink bill shows 1.5M High Speed. Don't know cost as it is bundled in with my phone for a total of $49.90.
Do you think getting a new modem would help?

Talk to CenturyLink, seems like you should consider upgrading to the 10mbps plan that is bundled with phone for about $60.

Your speed test shows you are getting the 1.5Mbs you are paying for. If you want anything faster, you'll need to upgrade your plan, as other have suggested.

In addition, a 2GB upgrade in memory will increase your speed.

If you buy more ram,, DO NOT PAY THE GEEK SQUAD to it install it,,, they are thieves. you can take it to the village computer club they will be more than happy to install it,, for no cost and help you out.there might even be someone there who has some memory sticks at home to sell or most likely just give you. with a machine that old, we all have memory sticks laying around. I just cleaned out here an pitched 6 or 8 sticks. as others have said your going to have to spend some money and get a faster speed from your internet provider. BTW we do not have a home line,, just use cell phones. we have sprint,, have NO ISSues at all with service great all over the bubble.

Thanks for all the info. I will get in touch with the computer club as you suggested and then call Centurylink about upgrading.
