I'm using Windows XP and somehow I've screwed up my start screen. It has always been the landscape background with my desktop icons along the left edge, my "quick click" icons along the bottom left and time, date and security icons in the right corner.
Some way, I'm sure it's me, I've managed to move the "quick click" icons to the upper left and time/security icons to the lower left (date has disappeared entirely). Any idea how I can return these to their original places on my screen? Your thoughts will be most appreciated.

It sounds like you accidentally moved your task bar.
Try this. CHANGE THE TASK BAR POSITION 1. Place the cursor on a portion of the task bar not used by a program. 2. Click and holding down the mouse button, drag the task bar to the bottom of thescreen. 3. Release the mouse button and the task bar will remain where you placed it.

Brilliant, zcaveman!! It worked and I'm now back to normal . . . all right, that's debatable.
I knew I hadn't done anything serious and the answer had to be fairly simple. Thanks a lot for your help. It's nice to be back in one's comfort zone.

Glad you are back.
Click on an empty spot on the taskbar and make sure the Lock the Taskbar is checked. I think that will prevent the problem from happening again.
