Default Laptop battery problem

I recently ordered a replacement aftermarket battery for my Compaq Presario. When the 1st one arrived, I installed it but the icon on the taskbar showed "battery not detected." I reinstalled the old battery and the icon showed "charging." I reinstalled the replacement and got the "battery not detected" message again.
I contacted the battery supplier and they sent me a new one. This one originally showed "charging" but once it reached 100% charge, the battery icon displays "battery not detected."
I tried unplugging the AC power cord and used the laptop for over an hour on battery but the icon says no battery installed.
Any tips other than asking for another replacement?

Try this. Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery. Hold down the power button for a full minute. Then retry the battery.
