Default What Linux Desktop version would you suggest?

So many Linux versions to consider. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I currently have Windows XP and have been using a computer for decades, but I am not a computer whiz by any means. I mainly use the computer to do word processing, play DVDs and music, surf the internet, and email. Which desktop version is pretty user-friendly?

Why are you considering Linux? If that is all you expect to do, go Chromebook.

Forgot to ask....I have a Pentium D processor on my computer running Windows XP. I hope my terminology is correct....it is a dual core processor. Is there anything I should be aware of when installing Linux? I will be installing it to dual boot with Windows XP. I didn't know if you have to do anything special when you have a dual core processor.

The Ubuntu family is pretty easy and has the largest community forums for help if needed. www.xubuntu.org is a good choice for Windows users.

See if this guide helps. In all honesty, you just have to install one and see if you like it.
