Hey retrob,

My name is Alex, and I work for Computer Corner. We are a small computer repair company down in Leesburg. Are you looking for the physical slot to put a CD in, or the location of the icon on the computer to start playing it? Feel free to call me at 352-460-1155 and I can help you with this.

If you are looking for the software to play CDs and DVDs, it is missing on Windows 10. I will let the other experts comment on the best options to get this software back.

Go to the manufacture website for your computer, and download the cd/dvd software for windows 10 version. If your computer is not terribly old, the manufacture should have updates available to download, now that you have Windows 10.

You can fix the not working DVD drive by running a simple command in Administrator Command Prompt. Type cmd in windows search. right click on Command Prompt. Select Run as Administrator. Paste the following command and hit enter

reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Cont roller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

You should RESTART your computer to apply the changes! DVD Drive should be working fine now!

Hope it works!

I have the same problem with my optical drive since installing Windows 10. When a CD is inserted, it opens the CD but neither of a couple of programs will play it.

I successfully did what is suggested in post #5 above. I've also used the device manager to uninstall the optical drive and the ATAPI controllers and let them be installed. Still a CD will not play. And I imagine the burner won't work either.

Are there any other suggested fixes for this problem? Thanks.

It's very strange. On one CD, I can see the directory in Windows Explorer and open Windows.doc and PDF files. On another CD from Tauck Tours, I can tell it to use Windows DVD player, or HP Media Smart DVD, or Media Player Classic, and I see opening screen and the player controls, but it will not play. Pausing or stopping and then pressing play does nothing. In Windows Explorer, I can see the file folders and files.

Both DVDs cause the DVD RW Drive E to show up in Windows explorer.

Thanks for any suggestions.

For the time being you can copy the files over to your computer, and play them there.

Check your computer manufacture web site to see if there are any dvd cd drive updates for Windows 10.

And of course if you have not already done so, do a google search to see if anyone else is having the same kind of problem with windows 10 with a solution.

VLC is a really good player. If you don't have it, I highly recommend it.
