Default Wi-fi speed

Currently have Bright House for ISP.

Reading at desk-top (hard wired) is over 50 Mbps.
However speed at laptop is only around 20.
These are 2 brand new laptops - HP.
Not a block house.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Agreed. I'd bet the existing router/access point might be 802.11g. 20 megabits sounds about right for that generation of the spec. If the laptops are recent, they probably have 802.11ac support, so get a router that supports that.
