We are arriving 9pm March 30 and "the" car rental seems like it's closed.
While we can use bikes and the LSV to get around, can anyone suggest a shuttle at night?

Go to www.virginiatrace.com and select the "good services" list. Under airport transportation there are several private folks listed who will pick you up at any of the airports and bring you to your villages home.

Your right. Something is broke. It usually brings up a PDF file with about 100 different services listed. I saved it the last time I went there. Here is the transportation folks listed.

I think you can still get a car rental at Sanford. We rented from Hertz last year in St. Pete. Our flight was delayed and we didn't get in until almost midnight. When we realized our flight was going to be delayed we called Hertz to see what would happen since their rental counter was scheduled to close at 9:00pm. They told us that the clerk is required to stay until someone with a reservation shows up. Sure enough, she was waiting on us and told us we were the only reservation she had but she still was required to wait for us. So call Hertz and ask. But I'm pretty sure they'll be able to accommodate you.

Has anyone found a reliable, affordable transportation service to and from the villages to the Sanford airport ? I have taken the villages bus to the orlando airport and found it very suitable, but prefer to use the other airport as it is a direct flight for me to Maine.
