Default Bookcases??

You all can track my progress moving in by the questions I'm asking. Now I'm ready for bookshelves - need lots and so am seeking inexpensive ones. Other than WalMart, Home Depot, and Lowes, any suggestions of where to look. I need about 12 feet of shelving in the office/bedroom and some in the living area. On another note, I will make Crispers this month. Look forward to meeting all of you helpful folks.

Antiques and Treasures has an eclectic variety of pretty decent furniture at great prices. Don't know about bookcases in particular, but they've a bit of everything.

They're in a small strip center on the SE corner of 466 and 301.
Good luck

Hi jojo,

My guess is that you want to buy your bookshelves locally. But if you don't find anything, have a look at IKEA. The one that is named "Billy" comes in different heights and depths, too, I think. It seems like the website said that IKEA is coming to Tampa, at some point. (I am probably spreading rumors. I have to get out of here for now and I am too lazy to look it up on IKEA's site. And I know that Tampa is a little far anyway.)

IKEA the store was an absolute maze to me. But I was there on a mission to find bookshelves and I already knew about "Billy." And they are not bad, not bad at all. You can also get those little boxes to go on them to stash loose stuff in. They have a chart that tells which boxes fit which shelves. IKEA, the store, is quite an experience. Maybe try the website. There are other ones besides "Billy" but that just happened to be the one I liked. That sure is a marketing thing, to give furniture people names. I guess it works. We remember.

Thanks Boomer. There is an IKEA in Orlando and I thought I might run down there next week. We visited an IKEA in Palo Alto where our son lives and found it quite interesting but I don't recall seeing the Billy line. I do have the catalog.

Just out of curiosity - what is wrong with Wal-mart, etc. I got mine at Wal-Mart and they look good and are sturdy and are functional.

Didn't have size or finish that I wanted. Perhaps I need to check out another WalMart.

Att: Talk Hosts - Why did this get moved to contractors and services? It is neither???

Another option, more expensive than IKEA's "Billy", is Wood You Furniture in Ocala. They have unfinished but real wood bookcases by Inwood. The bookcases can be finished to complement your style of furnishings. They usually have coupons in the "Newcomers Guide".

The following Inwood site shows the style of bookcases they offer:

http://www.inwoodfurniture.net/bookcases1.html

I bought two tall bookcases to make a "library wall" in my home. Chose to paint them the same color as the woodwork, rather than stain. I took it slow and did all the requisite sanding, priming, sanding again, etc. I'm very pleased with the results. I got the style I wanted, in the finish I wanted, and at considerably less than the furniture stores could offer. It was a satisfying project.

Wood You is at 1510 SW 17th St; 352-732-6611. I hve no affiliation with them other than being a satisfied customer.

jojo,

Sometimes I think we should just maybe build our own bookcases out of books. I wonder if that would work. In our last house, they were built into the family room wall where the kitchen entrance was. We ran builtins up over top that big doorway, too. It picks up some extra space. We have a project coming up here soon and I think we may do that again. You have to put the books you don't really want to read up there though. If we were illiterate, ours lives would be much more organized. Or at least we would by now be fabulously wealthy not having spent so much money on books and bookcases all these many years.

Juneroses, Thanks for the link. I don't have time for do it yourself but as I recall some of these stores will do the finish for a fee. I will check into it.

It got moved because it is generally commercial and didn't quite fit right in General.

It is good that you blamed Talk Host. He deserves it.

jojo,

Have you checked out Craigs list? We never new it existed until about 6 months ago.

We bought items from Craigs list, including my neon sign. What I like about this list is you can shop from the comfort of your home.

We ended up buying our bookcases in a yard sale right here in TV.

We bought three bookcases and not to sure if we will buy more. Our books are similar to rabbits, they continue to multiply. We are (I think) up to our 15th box of books (this year) we are donating to our local libraries. And yet, there are more.

I like Boomer's idea of making bookcases out of books.

HB,

I sold a lawn mower on Craigslist. Worked beautifully. I can find Craigslist for Ocala. Is there one for the Villages?

jojo, I do not know. We bought most of our items in Orlando and some in Ocala.

We were coming to our new home for the first times as the new owners, we got off the plane and got our rental car. We had a list of about a dozen places to stop and look at items we saw on Craigs list.

We bought all but two of the items, one was two heavy and the other timing to see the item was not good.

I was impressed that people held items for two weeks for us, not knowing us, and knowing we were in NY.

We got a list of all the neighboring places to TV and then checked on Craigs list to see which places cities/towns were close to us.

Have fun. We enjoyed our "treasure hunt"

Home Depot has cinder block and wood shelving for do it yourself bookcases - just like the old days!
