We had the half of the birdcage covered that is closest to the house. We sit under the canvas in summer and in the sun in the winter. Absolutely love it. Plus it helps to keep the enclosed lanai cooler.

I have just called for an estimate. Would you mind sharing cost? Thanks

We had quotes for canvas and an awning. Neither company was impressive. I had heard of SIP panels but White Aluminum said they were not allowed, then said they could take down the bird cage, and put up an awning for $23,000. I was told to call Simplex Aluminum in Mt Dora. The owner came out and spent considerable time taking photos and measurements and said he would send a quote via email. When he did they quoted $5300 and would simply replace the upper screen, add some additional structural components, and the roof would be three inch SIP (structural insulated panel). Further, the company said that engineering would ensure that their work met all codes, including hurricane winds, and that they would pull all necessary permits. We are exceptionally happy. The house is much cooler, the roof does not leak, and we can sit outside whenever we want even in the rain - unless it is blowing sideways. They request who referred you, so tell them Buck Williams gave you the referral. You can Google for their phone # or get back to me.

Ourselves and a few neighbors who had these and were told to take them down, fought with ARC and got them approved. The ones that Sunshine does have an aluminum framing that sits right over the screening. They still do leak a little in places during a heavy storm but we are happy to have it as our birdcage faces west |

We used Sunshine Cody also to partially cover a piece of our bird cage. His estimate was about $2300 and it included the aluminum frame and the ARC approval and county permits. One year later still looks good, keeps rain and sun out and winds don’t seem to bother it. High winds do cause some noise though when the canvas rubs on the screen underneath.
